Hey ladies,
So I think wearing my hair in a bun or a ponytail everyday (since I was like 3) has led me to love crazy hair colors. I've wanted to have purple, pink or blue hair for years but i was to afraid to dye my hair or worried about buying wig that wasn't a flattering shade. But I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and I also realize that i should probably do this while I'm still somewhat young and get this out of my system.

So I have some questions for all of you.

  • Do you have pics of black women with hair/wigs/highlights/extensions that aren't some variant of brown or black?
  • Have any of you ever dyed or highlighted your hair in an unorthodox color? Or Wore a weave/wig that wasn't really a normal shade?
  • If you have what were reactions you got?
  • Do you think black women need to stay away from this type of stuff? (Because it looks tacky, hood rattish, not professional, kiddish etc.)
  • What colors do you think black women should absolutely stay away from because of clashing colors?

Not yet but I will come back with some of my own

Yup! I dyed my hair multiple colors! Purple was my favorite!
  • If you have what were reactions you got?

At the time I was in high school. The cool black kids laughed at me. Said I was trying to be punk rock. Two years later they all had unnatural colors too and I was rocking a baldy. Two years after that, they were shaving their heads. Ridiculous.
  • Do you think black women need to stay away from this type of stuff?

I admit I had these thoughts when I first did it. But then I steadied myself and remembered that I was doing this because I wanted to. And I'm so glad I did. I can't wait to be able to dye my hair hair fun color again :)

Yellow lol. Other than that, I think most colors can be done in an interesting or cute way that doesn't leave a person looking like a clown that escaped from the carnival.

did you post something because i don't see anything.

oh I've been thinking red too. I know most of lhfc didn't like Rihanna's hair red hair but I loved hers and bom park's. They really made me want some.

yep! just be careful if you're relaxed, It chewed up my hair something fierce, but I also used pretty **** bleach.
  • If you have what were reactions you got?
Mixed, half 'wow thats really cute' and half 'what the ****'

sigh..honestly OP, there is one thing that all women who have dyed hair have in common. They dont give a rats butt what other people think about them, their hair, or their life choices. (lol) Do YOU Think your hair looks cute? do YOU want to do it? If so, then do it. And bump what random people on the street think. I dont see why this is something that black women should stay away from...this makes no sense to me, dying your hair isn't a race thing.

If you're worried about looking professional then yeah this probably isn't the move for you, but you're going to have the rest of your life to conform, might as well have fun now.

None really. It all depends on your skin tone. I can pull of blues and purples REALLY well, but my best friend pulled off pink way better than I could.

I am itching for purple hair. The only thing that is stopping me is that I am currently growing out a permanent color that I'm not too thrilled with. I wanted vibrant red hair but got a sandy brownish-red that is just not what I was going for. Lol. Anyway, I'm afraid to self-dye again so unless I can find a professional colorist who knows something about kinky/coily hair, I'm just going to hold off on the color. But... I will be lurking this thread for pics!

I used to wear a purple wig to school.. my boyfriend liked it. I didn't hear negative comments from anyone. I can see if I can find a pic. I think the tone of the purple complemented my skin tone.

Msmchy

You are totally one of my purple hair inspirations. lol. Gah! I want purple hair soooo badly. I'm going to have to find a stylist... *sigh*

In college I had purple, blue and blonde hair. Not all together. I had purple or blue bangs for a while then I bleached my hair and buzzed it so I had golden fuzz. I miss the days when i could do that. I try to sneak different color braids in every so often though.

I had a pink/purple rinse when I was like 12. My mom allowed me to do it since it washed out.

A good friend, male, dyed his hair green during the bar exam and another classmates went pink (male). They knew it would be the last time to try that since they were heading to corporate jobs.

I think it depends on the color and of course your job. There is a designer in my company with blue streaks (white woman) but she has them pretty hidden. They can only be seen when she wears certain styles.

Ok! Now I comment better. I'm so bad at texting. I started wearing crazy colors in college because I was living in a dorm and out of "getting smacked upside the head" reach. Mostly the reactions I got were from goth /emo kids. It was like I was accepted into their pact now, lol. The only places I could find funky colors were places like Hot topic, but I'm more of an 80's geek, not very scene. ( That's what the whipper snappers are calling it nowadays...:lachen:)

I would forget I had done anything to my hair and little kids would stare wide eyed at me like I was juggling. It became a conversation peice so I had to bone up on my world news because people do assume that your immature and not to be taken seriously.

They assume that your a trouble maker, a party girl, or a rebel, and I clearly am not. I don't really like using the term hoodrat or ghetto, so I'll say the color starts looking a certain way depending upon the wearer, the shade and how it's accesorized, lol. If your nails and clothes are matching your haircolor...things might have gone south.

I wear vintage and conservative clothing so it trips folks up to see pink hair in a Lucy Day dress. I'm not roackabilly ethier, although. I say, if you can get away with it, why not. Have fun. If you like it, do it. Just be warned, a normal conversation with a complete stranger will go like this:

Stranger: *aghast* "Oh my goodness! Is that your HAIR?"
You: "Um, yes." while smiling at their 5 year old who is staring at you like you are a super hero.
Stranger: "I could NEVER do that to my hair!!"
You: *fighting inner urge to say, "Well, then don't". smiling "I know. I hear that alot."
Stranger: Don't you work? What did your boss say? Are you a hairdresser?"
You: *pretending your phone is vibrating* "uh-oh, I got to go...take care!"

It's not normal to see a black woman with a crazy color in her hair and I find that most YouTube black girl s are very young and into the scene hair thing. People will try to put you in a box. It's frustrating because it's almost like we can't be multifaceted or goofy.

My sophmore year I had a really cute magenta/hot pink wig that I wore. I was really into bright colors back then (still am). I don't have anymore pictures but I bought the wig off of Ebay. It was basically a chin length style, tapered in the back with a long bang hanging over my eye in the front.

I got a lot of compliments on it, and also a lot of nay sayers. I enjoyed the experience though, and I think the shade I chose looked good with my skin tone. I really want to try purple in the future. The way u keep it from looking tacky is 1: Not getting a super shiny costume wig, look for something with not so much sheen, 2: Something that goes with your skin and eyes, accentuating them instead of clashing with them, & 3: A style that is overall cute, versatile, and suits your face.

Remember wearing a certain hair color requires a certain sense of style to compliment it. You can't be out here tryna rock all these bright colors, then turn around and dress HAM. When I had the pink I was kind of a Scene Kid, so I wore a lot of cute pastel colors or really dark punk rock stuff. I was into that back then (I still secretly am). Just make sure whatever color u choose goes with your overall look and sense of style. If you're classy, get something classy like Jeannie Mai-usually dark colors look more grown up. If you have a wild style get something along the lines of Avril Lavigne, Rhianna, Nicki, etc. Make it your own.

Bleached my hair a few years ago so I could have purple highlights. I used manic panic. Forgot what the color was called. but this is how it turned out. This was before I was into haircare. I LOVED my purple hair though. I may go back one day just to see what it looks like on natural hair.

I would recommend testing out some "bold" color at a wig shop to see how each color looks with your skin tone.

Also, depending on your age and work environment this look may not be appropriate - so maybe aim for a wig or clip in extensions – which would also be less damaging to your hair if you wanted to change it up again.

IMO, what looks good on a performer may not look appropriate on a "regular" person day-to-day. But if you have a bold personality or in an artistic field – go for it!

I've been stalking Msmchy, and I've been thinking about a hot pink streak in the back. I'm not sure I'll be able to do it though; my work sectors would not be too fond of unnatural hair colors.

Pehaps I can make a clip in with marley braid hair.
