I know it's not a good idea to re-relax too soon, but what is the minimum amount of time I can wait before relaxing again?

Hi Tee,

Sorry to hear this. Try to wait at least 2 or 3 weeks if it's really under processed. If it's not that bad, try to wait 4 weeks or so.

I know exactly how you feel. Try to wait at least 4 weeks before attempting to re-relax. It would be a good idea to identify WHY your hair was underprocessed, so you don't repeat it again. Believe me, you do not want to go there.

So what relaxer did u use, how long did u leave it in and what is your hair type?

For now, keep your hair really moisturised, by rinsing often, conditioning and protective styling. You will get over this soon

I used Affirm Lye (regular). I'm mostly 3C with some 4A near the top/crown area. I was underprocessed because the relaxer started burning very quickly. My stylist started in the back (even though I've told her the top is more resistant!

) so the back got pretty straight, but I started to burn by the time she got to the front, so we rinsed it out. I would say the relaxer was in my hair for only 3 minutes in the parts that didn't take.

OK, Tee, so at least we know why it didn't take. Was this your first time using this brand? Also, did you base your scalp? Next time you go in for a relaxer, make sure there is very little irritation to the scalp at least 3 days prior to relaxer and base the scalp very good with vaseline the night before the process.

This is my second time with the Affirm. I burned in a couple of spots the first time, but not like this. My hair dresser based with the Affirm Protecto, a liquid substance that protects and conditions the hair during relaxing. The thing is, I don't think that stuff is meant for use as a base because I know Affirm has a separate scalp protector cream. In any case, I have learned my lesson. I will take responsibility for basing myself! And my stylist has agreed to use a mild and start relaxing in the front next time. So, hopefully, I will have better results next time!

Thanks,

Tee

oh wow i am sorry you are having this problem. i have this problem too but i am confused as to whether it is underprocessed or texturized. i too started burning but i based myself since the lady didnt base me the last time. this is frustrating to me because these relaxers were recommeneded here but they burned and it was unbarely to take. ugghh back to square one. God bless you all.

Azul, are you using Affirm, too? If so, which strength? To me, the Affirm Regular is very very strong! I'm switching to Mild, and if that is still too harsh, I'll have to look for another relaxer.

I'm confused...I got underprocessed with the mild and I left it on for 25 minutes...I wonder what I could have done wrong..

Perhaps you needed a Regular instead. Depends on what you're trying to achieve. I leave a Regular strength Revlon Realistic on for 15 minutes and my hair is still curly afterwards, but that's what I want.

i used revlon realistic in regular and i based my scalp before hand but my hair was extremely thick so i may not have based well enough. i had to base because the lady never base me. well anyways i felt a tingle then it was burning but in the end it didnt come out completely straight. i dont know if it is underprocessed or texturized because when she got it out the roller set it looked straight until i put water near it. then it started curling up.

God bless you all.

I know all too well about this topic.

I waited 3 weeks for the next go around after getting a touch-up because the previous one didn't take. I suffered no damage, although my hair is STILL underprocessed. I am so tempted to be rid of perms altogether. Now, I am in no rush for my next perm. I am learning how to adapt to my hair while it is in this state, although I don't recommend it because there is more breakage as a result. *sigh*

I self relax with Affirm mild. I also use Affirm Gentle Assurance Sensitive Scalp Protector on my scalp and the Affirm Protecto on the new growth. I may even use vaseline/Sensitive By Nature scalp balm as extra protection. I would wait 3 at best 4 weeks before reapplying relaxer.
