I have 4a/4b type hair and before reading this and other boards I would relax every 5-6 weeks! Now I wait anywhere between 9-11 weeks with the help of co washes and being extra gentle (little manipulation). If I wait any longer than that I start to get breakage.

Well, I have this hair type and I wait up to 13 weeks. I used to relax every 8 weeks. Since coming to LHCF, I learned I can stretch it to 13 weeks with no shedding or breakage. 13 weeks and one day is too long and my hair will start shedding!

What benefits have you all gotten from stretching it out?

For me, it makes it so much easier to see all of my new growth when relaxing, so there's no or minimal overlapping.
Also, my hair seems to be fuller and healthier when I wait to relax. I really like it although the last couple of weeks can be rough!

I, too, used to relax every 6-7 weeks. Then I found this board, and stretched it to 13 weeks. That was too much, and I got some breakage. So now I'm going to try for about 9-10 weeks.

I think the less chemicals you have in your hair the better. So for those who relax their hair less often is a healthy choice for the hair. Stretching relaxers out helps the hair grow better and faster, IMHO. Just as those who are natural grow their hair faster than relaxed, we can do the same by stretching them out for the time being.

When I did get relaxers, I would relax every 8-10 weeks. Occasionally I would get braids instead of a relaxer, but for the most part, after 10 weeks, the two textures become unmanageable.
