You have probably been asked this hundreds of times..sorry!

I have had twists in for years and I still think I havent got it right .
I grease my hair every other day and take it out every 4-6 weeks ( I know I should probably do it sooner, but I really dont have the time).
Anways obviously when I take it out my hair is sooooo dirty, so I want to wash it while I have twists in. Trouble is I done that in the past and when I took my hair out it pretty much lockeds up in places. Is that normal? Where am I going wrong!?

Also when I do take my hair out and wash it everything is fine initially, I use a really good detangler conditioner which I wash out and loosens my hair. However after about 30mins of my being out it gets SUPER dry and starts to tangle which is just painful to part and retwist. Any suggestion on how to keep my hair soft and detangled for longer?

Wash (co wash) and deep condition weekly. Whether you are in twists (extensions) or not, you should keep up w/regular deep conditioning and care. Otherwise, your hair is drying out under those twists. Your hair is revealing just how dry it is after you wash and it dries out. It is hard to redeem your hair if you have let it dry out beyond repair. I have extensions in and I deep condition weekly, so it can be done.

I agree with virtuenow - co-washing and deep condish whilst in twists. You mentioned greasing your hair, but I would recommend you use any moisturizing sprays on your hair as well.

If you are using a regular shampoo that is probably drying you out by stripping your hair. I see that if you are using grease it might be harder to get away from sulfate based shampoos too.

I would suggest trying a natural thick butter. Like mango, shea, cocoa mixed with studd to soften it or similar. I hear some ladies have great results with crisco too! That way you can avoid having to use stripping products to rinse the grease out.

I use a stocking cap over my twists when I wash, which helps prevent excessive frizzing and, for me, matting. If I try to wash them loose (no extensions), they just unravel.

Your hair may have locced up b/c the shed hair was not removed. Kinda like when removing a weave or extensions after a month or so. You should always remove the shed hair BEFORE any water touches your hair to avoid matting. Maybe you can take them down and braid into four big sections to wash.

Also, you may fare better to wash/DC as you wear the style (weekly or biweekly) as that will help to remove any buildup which joins with the shed hair to mat. I think the matting occurs when waiting too long in between washes.

Either way, I hope you're able to find a solution that works for you :)

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I will try co washing my hair again, maybe it was just my technique (Im sure there loads of videos on youtube to show me).

TalkTru I will defo look into getting a moisturising spray. I think I have been so focused on growing my hair and putting good things on my scalp that I completely neglect the hair thats already there!

DarkJoy when I say grease, im just being old school sorry. Im currently trying out a natural oil mixture I purchased, from looking at the ingredients its just all oils.
