Twistouts/braidouts-share Some Pics And Techniques

I haven't started a hair forum thread in so long.

I'm kind of bored with my hair right now, and I want some inspiration. Anybody done some nice twistouts/braidouts lately? Share a pic and also share your technique! Products, how many twists/braids, wet or dry hair, etc.

I am finding that at this mid-length (almost APL i think), I want mine to have more stretch and volume so i attack the roots with my blowdryer when i'm done. I will do one tonight and try to post a pic tomorrow.

I was too for a while...afraid they wouldn't come out right. But I'm tired of doing my hair, and want to give it a rest 'til Spring. I'll be trying a braid out as I don't like twist outs.

Have you tried flat twisting for your twistout? I do flat twists with a rod at the bottom and the results are EPIC!

I don't have any pics but I was very style challenged for years and now I can get pretty consistent results with my flat twist outs and braid outs (cornrows).

- being heavy handed with product
- set overnight and then some
- smooth the hair down every time u twist or braid. try to get it as smooth as possible. this is more about technique than product.
- start with clean hair
- moisture beforehand goes a long way. when I use my best leave ins it gives my hair more fluff by the time day 3 comes around instead of dry and hard day 3 hair
- flaxseed gel
- braiding tight when cornrowing
- actually twisting the hair while twisting
- slicking down my edges always makes the style look better than it is lol
- skinny perm rods on ends

How long does it take to learn to flat twist?
Do you blow dry beforehand?

I'm a visual learner so I had to keep watching YouTube videos until the method clicked for me. Babylon Kay has one that reallllly helped me break it down like duh.
I'm pretty style challenged so at first I could only do flat twists on flat ironed or blow dried hair, but now I can do it on damp hair.
I think I started doing twist outs every now and then starting 6 months ago. I only do 4 twists to keep it as easy as possible.

Thanks for sharing the videos. I have been wearing twist outs lately and love them because they are so easy and they look like you put a lot of effort into doing your hair. After the 3rd day I usually end up with a textured bun which looks great.

Moroccanoil curl cream worked well for me. My cousin uses it (natural for way longer than me) and she suggested it to me. I did a twistout on wet hair and it came out okay, a bit stringy looking though. I tried it a second time on towel dried hair and I used bigger sections (about 2 inches) and my first day hair looked great. I air dried overnight. It normally takes 1 - 2 days for my twist out to look like I prefer (and to hang to my shoulders) but with this curl cream I got cute first day hair. My hair is APL. I didn't use a lot (maybe a half dollar size) and only have the 2 oz sample.

Twist outs are my go to style. Here's what has gotten me the best results:

* Starting with damp (not sopping wet and not dry) hair
* Flat twisting and bantu knotting the ends (so my ends are curly and I don't have to sleep with those darn perm rods in my hair)
* I get great results using Oyin Juices N Berries, Oyin Hair Dew, Oyin Burnt Sugar Pomade, and Taliah Waajid Curly Curl cream
* I make sure my hair is fully dry before I untwist my hair

Lately, I have been trying out Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. I have to make sure that my hair is super moisturized before I use it since it can be drying. However, that product gives my twist outs great definition. Also, for the winter, I am starting to use a heavier moisturizer ( Hair Dew is great for the summer but I need more moisture in the winter) so I am using As I Am Double Butter Moisturizer

I don't have any pics at this moment since I'm at work, but what works for my braidouts is if I do them on slightly damp or dry hair with hair grease/pomade and/or gel. I also avoid products with glycerin in them so that my hair does not revert or frizz out.
