For me it is imperative that I trim/dust my hair regularly if I am to have thick full hair. Trimming for me means the difference between this (regular trimming)

and this (not trimming for about 4 months):

I had to trim about 2 inches just to get my hair to feel right. So all that length I was trying to hold onto went poof! Not worth it IMO

Regular trimming took me steadily from one inch in 12 months to this:

And then from that in 12 months to this:

And not trimming took me from hardly seeing any progress as the dead ends just seemed to tear away to nothingness...to almost where I was a year prior. To this (that was after I got my hair right by trimming those ends):

Here's a side-by-side comparison. First two pics showing healthy growth from regular trimming. Last two pics showing first the sad ends, and then what I was left with when I got rid of them so I'd have uniform thickness along the length (Chronologically Aug 2002, Aug 2003 and last two pics Dec 2003):

I think it all depends on how many splits and how much breakage you have.
If you have very little or none, then...NO Need.

But if you have splits then trimming is best.

Can someone teach me how to avoid splits & breakage because I haven't learned that trick yet.

I believe in prevention being better than cure. So I just do regular "cleaning" up as routine. Learned it from Brenda (www.blackwomenrejoice.com) and Wanakee and I've never looked back. I always imagine if I wait till I see splits, it might be too late for some strands.

Avoiding splits? Maybe protective styling 24/7?

How often do you trim?

Oh dear... I don't really have a schedule. At one time it was every 6-8 weeks. Now I'll just pick a moment and as I redo my twists clip about 1/4 inch of the end of each twist that has been redone till all have had a trim.

bump, id like to know too.

I use to trim regularly but I stopped because I realized that I was cutting all my good growth away.

My hair is braided -extensions- 24/7- and it's pampered 24/7, its not being manipulated, no heat, and its natural 4b, so I dont think it's necessary to trim regularly anymore. I’m going to start trimming 1 once/twice a year from now on.

Remember braids are my middle name so my hair gets the best care when in extension braids. Yet, when it thinned as shown in the pics above in only 4 months of not trimming, I was in braids. And when my hair remained thick due to regular trimming I was also in braids. Actually I had been in braids from August 2001 all the way to the pics you see December 2003. And it was only in those four months that I didn't trim my hair that it thinned. I also pampered my hair 24/7 and also didn't use heat. I used to wear it mostly in a "protective style" actually so that even the ends of my hair were "protected" and not just dangling and exposed to the drying air. Yet not trimming cost me the health of my hair.

I don't bother looking for split ends but I imagine split ends would look just like the name says: a strand that splits into two or more ends. I just believe a stitch in time saves nine so knowing from logic that old things wear out regardless of how much care we take of them, I am convinced that ends of hair will split or wear down just from being around for long. So I snip them before they start spreading their ruggedness to the rest of the length. Works for me anyway, so I continue to do it.
