How many of you have done this? I am considering this but I feel I've been waiting for so long to grow my hair out. What did you do to keep both textures strong?

I transitioned for 18 months. I didn't know it was called transitioning at the time. I basically wore my hair in extension braids or cornrows. I would have them done every six to 12 weeks.

thanx! i think im 4a. U know what? I've never seen my natural hair except for the first inch or so. I've been relaxed for as long as I can remember

Yep. My stylist refused to cut it off and I was tired of paying $300 to $500 for my braids, so I got my sister in law to cut the relaxed ends off.

Now I basically do most of my own styling unless I want elaborate cornrows.

I get my sister in law to trim my hair and cornrow it.

gvsugirl,

I'm transitioning w/out chopping, I'm 5 months in, and it hasn't been easy b/c you have to learn to deal w/ the 2 textures, and a lot of products that work on your permed hair don't necessarily work for your natural hair. I guess when considering transitioning w/o chopping, you have to ask yourself why you want to do it to evaluate whether or not it's worth it for you. I'm about 3 inches from bra strap, and I can't bear to part with my length, but I'm sort of curious as to my natural texture, and also I want a break from perming. If you do decide to transition, do a "transitioners" title search b/c their are quite a few ladies on this board who are transitioning w/o doing the big chop.

I'm transitioning without chopping. It is a challenge but I enjoy it for the most part. If my hair wasn't damaged, then I'd wear it straight more often! Good luck with your decision!

I'm a 4a/4b (I think) transitioning without chopping, and I'm on the 11th month. After you get to month like 7, you know your hair a lot better and it gets easier. I still do have breakage at the demarcation line, but not that much. I like mousse, I wear my hair in boring styles a lot, lol but it's not very difficult. I think that natural hair is stronger than relaxed hair so it is much much easier to care for if you don't always do braids, twists, locs and those kind of hidden styles that I don't know how to do anyways.

I've been considering doing this as well. I would love to go back to having all natural hair once and for all, but can't stand the thought of cutting all of these years of growth off. I'm glad to know it's working for you all.

I have been transitioning for 1 year and gradually cutting off relaxed ends-- still have about 8 inches of relaxed hair in some places and 5-6 inches of naural hair. i will not cut off all the relaxed hair until I have atleast 8-10 inches of naural hair. Initially, it is difficult because of the 2 texures but it does get better. I think months 6-8 where the worst and after that i was able to deal with 2 textures as i learned what worked and what did not. always devide hair into atleast 4 sections b4 washing. I also like to precondition each section with warm lustersilk cholesterol for 1/2 hr (trick from peachtree--thanks peachtree) and than wash. this trick really helps with the tangles. I han wash eac section with moisurizing shampoo and conditioner, followed by a deep conditioner for at least half hour. air dry and sometimes blow dry roots on cool. pull hair back and put on pony pony. First 4 months or so just put my own hair up or back and after this relied on ponypony because didn't want to use heat or damage hair. Will ry different styles with my own hair after transition complete. the key is to moisturize and figure out one or 2 attractive styles that don't require too much tugging, pulling, combing , brushing while u are transitioning. good luck.

i am currently doing this and i have no intentions on during the big chop anytime soon-basically i just make sure to keep my hair moisterized-i used CD's HHB or some carrot oil cream along with hair grease to seal in the moisture. i still used my protein shampoo/ conditioners to keep the hair strong and i also found that it minimizes breakgae and shedding to some extend-right now i am using joico k-pak items but before that i was using optimum care super protecting shampoo. oh and some areas of my hair are much thicker and prone to tangles so i make sure to keep them extra conditioned and to not be so rough with them-i hope this helps.

i had alot of problems such as breakage when i first started out but it was all because i used the wrong stuff on my hair

I don't know if I can deal with half relaxed and half natural hair. I'm transitioning and can't wait to be done with it. But I know my head is too big to be chopping my hair off!

I did it for about a year..

I wore braids and weaves during that time...the more new growth I had the harder it was for me to get the tangles out.. so eventually I just kept trimming the ends..and after I had about 4-5 inches of new growth I did the big chop..

Its sooooooo much easier once u cut the permed ends off.. my permed ends would always get matted together..it was a pain in the *** detangling it all.

I transitioned for two and a half years, so it is definitely possible. I got the new growth professionally pressed. As my hair grew out, I gradually got the relaxed hair cut off. I have never worn extensions or any type of fake hair before. Even though I was using heat, I have always believed in working with what I have. I haven't gotten my hair pressed since June of 2001 (the last time a professional has done my hair), and my hair is definitely thanking me for it, since my hair is really "on the grow."
BTW, I only recommend my route when done by a professional who knows what they are doing. (:

Hey,it has been a year for me of transitioning without chopping. In the beginning,it was difficult, but now I got the hang of it.One special tip I can give is to never comb the hair while it's dry(from root to ends).I have been able to comb my hair when it's wet with a very fine tooth comb without breakage. I apply two products to my hair after washing: 911 leave in creme conditioner and Carol's daughter Mimosa Hair Honey.Works like a charm

in all honesty in my hair you can't even really tell that its half perm and half natural. i think once you get mid way in transitioning the texture difference isn't that bad or noticable, espcially if you decide to air dry your whole head or blow dry it all.

Yes, I agree that it really depends...I've found my hair easier to deal with now that I'm in the 8th month as opposed to the 3rd month.

i wore braids for a year and the perm just reverted. no chopping, no trimming, nothing. someone else posted something to this effect on the "how many naturals are there really?" thread

I have been transitioning for 10 months now. It hasn't been easy, I try to keep my hair moisturized and I usually wear wigs, crochet braids (in pics) and now I am wearing individuals. January will make one year and I will see if it is time to cut.

The key for me is to keep the "line" as moist as possible. When I'm being lazy & don't feel like pooing or rinsing, I'll just cover my head with a plastic cap (or add a water based moisturizer before covering with a plastic cap) then go to bed.

This is a wonderful lil technique to keep the "line" moist without having to go through a lot of trouble.... u can just rinse or poo in the morning.
