I am currently in the transitioning phase. I want to attempt to go to natural and eventually texturize my hair. Not sure but I definitely want to take a break from relaxing. I've been relaxed for the past 10 years of my life and i'm just tired of it. So I decided that March 05 would be my last relaxer. I started off with putting weaves for the summer. It was time to take my weave out, so yesterday I went to the domincan salon that I have been going to for the past 3 years. I love them and since i've been going there my hair has been amazing! I'm currently bra strap length. One of the stylists that usually does my hair offered to take my weave out so she proceeded to do so and was like are you going to put a relaxer today? I said no just a wash set and blow. She goes no it is very very neccessary! I was like no I don't want a relaxer, then she was like no you have to put it, its very neccessary. And she kept going on about this and I told her no that's not what I want. She finally gave up and after she took my weave out she was like OMG why would you put this "thing" in your hair. You have long beautiful hair. I was soooo annoyed and honestly she turned me off and I don't want to go there again! When she was blow drying my hair by the way she was like you have to relax your hair the next time you come! Now I really don't want to go there again! Ladies what is your opinion? Fellow transitioners..anyone of you ever experience this? What would you do if you were in my position?

Well she crossed the line when she demanded you get a relaxer very unprofessional. Dont go back to her, find a stylist that will cater to your specific hair needs.

ITA!!!!!!! JUST FIND ANOTHER STYLIST WHO RESPECTS YOUR WISHES

i'm just mad b/c i've been going there for so long and she acting like that..now I have to find another salon..she was one of the best one's there!

I think it is because they are very INTO LONG HAIR and that is her mindset, and since you had been going there all that time, she probably figured you were both on the same page and you probably psyched her out, lol. I really do not think she meant to be disrespectful...I think it has a lot to do with how she was trained to view hair as the ideal...relaxed and long. You may just have to find another stylist that is not on that same wavelength because I do not think she would ever truly underestand where you are coming from and you would probably mess with her head, if you tried to convince her....lololo. Bonjour

Ive had similar experiences. Have been told you have to get a relaxer next time while transitioning and made to feel like the worse person in the world  . I explained to them I was transitioning and they continued to say I could have healthy relaxed hair (which I am sure I can, but that isn't the reason I transitioned) But they were familiar with me prior to transitioning and when they noticed how much fuller my hair was and healthy as well, they stopped sweating me. I think they are just being lazy. They don't want to roll it because it isn't as easy and they don't want to blow it because it takes longer. THey got used to it though. :ohwell:

I had the same experience except this was my first and last visit with this salon. They kept telling me that I can't go without a relaxer and that my hair would break. (I think it would break because she was using a rat tail comb to detangle my hair  ) When she was blowing me out, she complimented me alot on the texture of my new growth saying it would be easy to blow out. (confusion) Just when I thought things were settled, they said I should use a certain deep condition before my next relaxer.
I never went back. I think you should find someone who will understand what you are going through without trying to convince you to think how they do.

Hi there! I'd have stated very firmly that it is not my intention to ever get a relaxer again and if she felt that she couldn't handle natural black hair or the two textures, then I would be moving on.

Is there anyone else in the salon that's not so pushy? Maybe she just meant that you're stressing your hair at the demarcation line. Does she understand english well?

Does it have to be a Dominican Salon? I'm in AZ, but I love these ladies' philosophy and website, and you're in NY. Maybe give em a try?

Good luck,

This has happened to me at AA salons too I'm 100% natural and make that very clear, they give me a press and tell me that next time I come I need to relax my hair because it's so thick and that it will be easiter on my hair. my hair will be more healthy and longer---go figure. Those are the exact reasons why I stopped relaxing.

Her english is not that great, she's one of the better stylist..there are others there too like 2 others that I really like but they are rarely there when I go!..lol Eventually I'd like to go to curve but that will be when I'm fully natural! There is a natural salon like 3 blocks away from the place I go to now. I just love going to my regular salon b/c they do good blow outs and like I said my hair really grew since I started going there. Anyone ever been to a natural salon? I have one of their cards and apparently they help you through your transition phase. I've been debating going there, but I may just put in braids for awhile...not sure...I'm so new at this! I'm only 5 months post relaxer!

I have this problem all the time and I'm not even transitioning, I just stretch for extended periods (like 5 months). It doesn't matter if it's a Dominican Salon or an African American one--everybody wants you to get a relaxer. One time I went to this salon and I was literally 2 weeks post and the woman demanded that I relax my "underprocessed" hair. So I immediately got up. I have this fear that some stylists will rip your hair out and then tell you, "see what happened, that's why you need to let me give you a relaxer" :perplexed . Since I moved to a texturizer, this issue hasn't gotten any better. I've found that stylists just like to work with bone straight hair, which doesn't work for everyone.

My suggestion would be to find a salon that will accomodate you, and even try some transitioning styles with less manipulation (i.e., braidouts, braids, etc.) Also, if you really want to continue at your salon, find deep conditioners that easily soften and detangle your new growth so they can comb through with ease. Good Luck on your transition!
