On the Grow and Keeping it Simple
Ok ladies, who's still hangin' in there? How much time left until you chop? How much newgrowth do you have now?
I reached my 6 months mark on 9/14. I'm chopping in one year and have about 3.5-5 inches of newgrowth (some spots grow fast, others SLOWWWW).

I'm still hanging in there... 10 months.... newgrowth is length from 3-5 inches (my front grows superslow). Big chop probably around my birthday next year... so I have a good 7 months left.

Good Luck to you!

Hi Ladies, I am a new Transitioner (3.5 months), and I plan to go a long time before being relaxed free.

Can you tell me how you are styling your hair while transitioning for so long.

Thanks

Buns, twist and braid out ponytails, more buns. Everyonce in awhile I flatiron it (maybe once a month).

I'm 28 weeks this Friday. I plan to go another 24 weeks if I don't make myself bald first.

I spent the first 14 weeks doing no styles at all but a pony tail or a bun. Then I got twisted extensions for 6 weeks. After that disaster, I have started doing more transitioning styles. I don't blend the two textures nor have I done any flatironing or straight styles. All my hit and miss styles are in my transitioning album.

Fellow transitioner checking in…

I’m 32 weeks into my transition and plan to chop when I feel I have a good enough length. I’ve worn short perm rod styles for months on end so I know that I don’t want to big chop and be left with 3 inches of hair. So if it takes me until 2007 to reach my desired length so be it.

Right now I think I have 3 inches of new growth, maybe less, maybe more. It seems like my hair is growing slower, or I'm just experiencing a major case of shrinkage. Either way, I've stopped focusing on length and plan to keep my hair cornrowed for the next 6 months. Maybe this will put me closer to my hair goal.

I know that I hate bone straight relaxed hair so that’s enough motivation for me to continue transitioning. Good luck ladies and happy hair growing! :antlers:

I'm about 22 weeks post relaxer...I've had a lot of shrinkage. Not sure what my length is less than 3.5 inches though! I'm hanging in and I'm not doing the BC.

I am a year and 5 months post relaxer. My big chop is planned for April 2006 which will make two years. My styles are braidouts and blowouts. I swear by Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner.

I'm about 16 & 1/2 months into my planned 18 month transition. I have enough natural hair to chop but I really want to reach my goal of 18 months. I still have about 2-3 inches of relaxed hair left.

Caligirl and Silky, that is amazing! You ladies are my heroes! Do you have alot of support from friends and family? I know i don't. Nobody seems to get it.

I guess I am the baby of the transitioners! I am 10 1/2 weeks post relaxer, and I am not planning on any big chop period! I plan to go all the way to the end.

My problem is that I am style challenged, but I have been getting some great tips from some of the ladies here!

I plan to take it one day at a time, until I reach my goal! I think looking at all of the beautiful relaxed hair on LHCF is tilting the scale a little bit, but then I focus on what's in my heart.

I think I'm about 8 months post.

I'm not sure of how much newgrowth I have but I just recently added a photo to my fotki to compare. I basically keep my hair cornrowed though...never knew how good I got at doing it until I took a photo of the back! It hardly seems as if my hair is getting longer at all...but I did flat iron a section and it had a nice bounce to it!

WOW...you've really hung in there! That's very encouraging because I might do the same thing (transition for a long while) depending on how fast my hair grows this upcoming year. :ohwell:

Congrats Ladies! Everyone is doing so well! Thanks for responding, its feels good to know that I'm not alone in the struggle, lol! Keep the responses coming, this can't be everyone!

3 mos 1 wk in. No BC for me. About 2.75 inches of ng. I plan to let my hair grow untouched by scissors for the next 2 or more years until I feel like I want to cut it...I want a LOT of natural hair...like past bra-strap unstretched before I get rid of the relaxed hair...because I have a lot of relaxed hair and I don't want my hair short.

Yeah, I get a lot of compliments on my "natural" hair. I've started getting a lot of strangers asking me where I'm from because I guess my hair makes me look exotic or something. I tell you I have straight up "black girl hair" if you know what I mean. But I think natural hair is becoming more popular...even relaxed heads are getting rod sets, flat twists, cornrows, etc. Personally, I love having the option of having my hair thick and kinky/curly one day, then pocohantas straight the next.

It's been almost 22 weeks for me since I've had my last relaxer application. For some reason, my hair is growing extremely fast. I do get frustrated with my hair at times when it's day 2 of a twist out and it looks dry!!! But I conditioner wash on a regular basis, and braid it up at night, and it looks great the next day when I take the braids down. I always wear my hair up in a messy bun or updo and I get tons of compliments. I was never a big fan of relaxed hair; I only relaxed because it was easy to comb thru and such. My hair never liked chemicals...EVER. I always experienced extreme irritation after a touch up.

All I know is, I like my hair big and curly, and other people do too, so it's cool. I don't feel as though Big Chopping will be neccessary for me. If I weren't able to put my hair in a ponytail, I don't know what I'd do since I don't wear braids or weaves...etc.

Happy transitioning, gals!

I think I'll join.....I am...15 wks past my last relaxer? It looks like I have about one and a half inches of new growth. And, I don't plan on cutting my hair any time soon. I can't stand short hair, it drives me crazy, and anything shorter than the base of my neck...woo. I just have to learn how to take care of it....

I will be 27 wks post on 9/22 and I never plan to BC. I have never measured but I 'm guessing that I have about 3-4 inches of new growth over 6 months. I am soooo excited because I am actually getting length. No current pictures but it is enogh that my husband noticed. Yeah Baby!!

Awww thank you. I'm one of the lucky ones because I have lots of support from my family and friends. Everyone seems to love my natural hair. My Mom is the one who encouraged me the most, though. She had been natural for about a year before I made my decision to transition. Transitioning was the best hair decision I could have made. I looked at my freshly washed hair in the mirror earlier today and thought to myself "there is no way I could ever relax this hair again." I would totally miss my natural hair.

Thank you. You can do it too! My transition really wasn't that difficult for the most part. Months six through ten were the toughest months for me. I had such a hard time detangling. The two different textures just would not cooperate. I've since found conditioners that do most of the detangling for me and for that, I am grateful. :D Kenra, Elucence, NTM, Dove and Suave alll come to mind. Find yourself a good conditioner & keep your hair well moisturized and you will be there in no time. Good luck!

I am a serious lurker but comming out may help me. This is not my first time transitioning, but I hope its my last. I usually get frustrated and run back to the perm only to become upset with myself.

So this time I am in it to the end! I am only 4 1/2 weeks into my transition and I am just begining to see the first signs of new growth and I am so excited. I plan to grow out my hair for a year but I get tempted to perm then chop, chop, chop I go.

Good luck to everyone on this journey.

SilkyandSmooth...I just quoted you in photo #61 of my photo album! ITA.

Just thought I'd chime in... I'm 9 mths post and I have another 9 mths to go. I've been natural twice before and always relaxed my hair when pregnant?! :look: But now I'm older, more calm, and I know what I want and NATURAL HAIR IS IT!!! And I luv'd my natural hair. I mainly keep my hair in protective styles and just recently I discovered a wash & go looks great as long as I wear a scarf or headband over my new growth. I have about 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 inches of newgrowth and I only shampoo about twice a month. I cond wash all the time though. Conditioner is what's getting me thru this transition without pulling my hair out! So stay encouraged everyone and see ya on da nappy side!!!! :)
