Transitioners HELP!

Transitioning over here and I'm going on 13 weeks post.

I cowash every other day and water wash in between. DCing weekly.

I haven't really "combed" though my hair in a while and I have just finger combed.

Today, I decided I would do a comb through with my cake cutter and fine tooth comb.

I feel like I just lost a war. This was the outcome:

My questions are:

1. Is this a normal amount of hair loss during a wet detangle comb out?

2. What conditioner helps with minimizing tangles?

3. Is it better to detangle dry (before cowashing) or wet (after cowashing)?

4. What kinds of after leave-in products would you recommend to possible help with tangles and knoting (right now I am using Lacio Lacio).

TIA :)

I'll bump for you because I'm losing about that much hair too when I detangle my hair. It doesn't appear to be broken pieces of hair but I'm concerned that it's too much as well.

I normally leave my hair in braids for a week under a wig and then wash and detangle on Saturday with cowashes/rinses in between because of exercising and sweating profusely everyday.

Can anyone help us? Is this too much hair loss after a week of no combing?:ohwell:

By the way, I'm 26 weeks post.

C'mon ya'll help some sistas out! :look:

Considering you haven't combed through your hair in a while, this isn't a lot of shedding at all. I lose WAY more than that during my weekly shampoo, but I am also experiencing post part shedding. However, this is a normal amount. You should detangle in the shower with lots of conditioner in your hair though and also under the running water as it aids in the detangling process. Silicon Mix helps my ng stay soft and makes it easier for me to detangle.

I'm going to take a stab at this - being a newbie on the board and also having had the experience of twice this kind of fall out.

1) This is a normal amount of hair loss during a wet detangle combout with a FINE TOOTH COMB - Someone said it best on another thread when they said that Transitioners treat ALL their hair like relaxed hair when in fact they should be treating all their hair like natural hair. So the fine tooth comb is no longer welcome. Your line of demarkation (where the relaxed hair meets the NG) is terribly sensitive and to pull a fine tooth comb through it is begging for breakage.

2) There are a number of conditioners that help with detangling. I typically use Optimum Oil Therapy Conditioner, I used to use CON detangling shampoo and conditioner (which worked wonders). the key is....

3) NEVER DETANGLE DRY. You always want to gently detangle wet during co-washing (so before you rinse it out. And you want to start from the tip to the root - GENTLY. A lot of ladies on the board recommend getting a denman brush to do just that. It's what I've been using as a transitioner and it's really gentle.

4) I'm going to leave the product questions to the more experienced ladies on the board. I see that it's really an experience thing as well as what your hair really responds to. I'm understanding that Steam treatments REALLY help with lessening tangles and knotting but I'm not an afficionado for that yet.

I hope this helps - or begins helping. I know how I felt when I saw all that hair come out of MY head.

A couple of searches through the board and a few looks at folks FOTKI's should send you on your way to healthier hair :)

1. Is this a normal amount of hair loss during a wet detangle comb out?

I'm going to stay yes. I lose double this amount during my detangling sessions. every time. But I'd also have to say that we are all different and if you feel like this is abnormal for you then you may need to change your co-wash conditioner or perhaps cowashing is not agreeing with your hair. I know mine prefers deep conditioning conditioners and does not really like lots of basic conditioners like the vo5's and suaves. You have to experiment.
2. What conditioner helps with minimizing tangles?
I like the ORS Replenighing or the Silicon Mix. These conquer tangles well for me. For me, the Suaves & vO5's do very little for the detangling process.
3. Is it better to detangle dry (before cowashing) or wet (after cowashing)?

Natural hair is always better to detangle wet. But I have found a glitch in that theory. If you are transitioning I find that it is a good idea to FIRST use a wide tooth comb to detangle the relaxed length while it is dry but the roots work much better when it is loaded with conditioner & wet. I have also found that It is easier to detalgle the crown & front edges in a forward direction. I think it is less stress.
4. What kinds of after leave-in products would you recommend to possible help with tangles and knoting (right now I am using Lacio Lacio).

I've heard lots of raves about Lacio Lacio but I haven't used it myself.

My favorite Moisturizing detanglers are
1. Kid Organics Shea Butter Detangling Moisturizing Hair Lotion

[/B]I am also starting to like diluted lottabody setting lotion as a detangler & moisturizer.

I am 14 months into my transition and I have type 4b/a hair.
And yes...I am very frustrated with my hair right now. But it's growing.

Thank you. I have been meaning to get some silicon mix.

I am learning that my hair prefers heavy conditioners. The ORS packs work great, why I didn't use it this time I don't know. I'm going to try that silicon mix too.

WOW 14 months, do you plan on bcing soon or at a later post mark?

I like your style in your siggy. :yep:

Like most of the ladies have said, the amount you've lost is normal. I experienced this a few times a week at one point (I wash and co-wash sometimes every other day, depending on the time I have) I was concerned at first, but it lessened a great deal and I'd say this was 3 weeks ago that it happened.

When I wash my hair, the night before my hair is only wrapped in a scarf loosely. By the next morning, I have serious tangles. What I do once I wash, I apply Aussie Moisture conditioner (thick as all get out and does wonders on my tangles) i let it sit, go through my shower routine, then I run a little water through my hair and as I get ready to detangle with my wide tooth comb, I squeeze the section I'm working on, rubbing the conditioner deep into the tangles, while my hair is under the water - you'd be surprised at how easy the comb goes through. This method, for me, doesn't yield as much hair loss because my hair is easier to detangle.

So don't be too alarmed about the amount of hair you've lost.[/COLOR]

1. Is this a normal amount of hair loss during a wet detangle comb out?

I really wouldn't know... I detangle under running water in my shower with Jilbere Shower Comb... if any hair comes out, I never see it.

2. What conditioner helps with minimizing tangles?

I use Suave Tropical Coconut to co-wash & pre-co-wash. If your tangles are severe you might try baggying nightly with glycerin or a conditioner and then doing daily co-washes. This is what I do.

3. Is it better to detangle dry (before cowashing) or wet (after cowashing)?
IN THE SHOWER UNDER RUNNING WATER WHEN HAIR IS SATURATED WITH CONDITIONER IS THE ONLY WAY IT SHOULD BE DONE!!!

I use Giovanni Direct Leave In. I'm also really loving "LONG LOVELY LOCKS CURL CUSTARD"
