I don't get breakage from extending the time between my touch-ups. I've been getting touch-ups every 16-18 weeks and plan on waiting longer as long as my hair continues to thrive. I've found products that keep the right balance of moisture and protein in my hair to keep breakage at bay. I also comb my hair very gently to ensure that I don't cause mecahnical damage or breakage at the line of demarcation.

I can go about 3-4 months..tops..any longer and I have alot of breakage. I don't like to relax any sooner than that...i need a good demarc to avoid overlap.

i have not relaxed in 7 months and i'm pretty sure my hair isnt breaking because of it. i've been using sew in weaves which probably helps.

I'm trying to do 12 weeks consistently and see how that goes. I've gone longer, but with breakage.

ETA: Flatironing the roots or keeping my hair curly helps.

Every 15-16 weeks for me. No breakage. I wear protective styles, keep it moisturized and do very little manipulation.

Ditto! here I had my last relaxer on December 21,2004 and will relax again on September 20,2005. I wanted to give my hair a break but I have been stretching with braids and sew in weaves. How long are you planning on stretching asphyxxia?

I usually go anywhere from 14-16 wks. I am currently 20 wks. post and trying to stretch to 24, thus making the 6 month mark :trampolin

The last time I waited 20 weeks and I think I will be going to 23 weeks this time. I'm currently at weeks 10 and barely have an inch of new growth. I only get about 1/4" or a little more, but not 1/2", each month. I do get some breakage, but with braids and extra care when combing I've been able to keep it to a mininum.

Hi Nita,

I didn't experience breakage at all because I just left it alone. This was HARD to do because trust me I wanted to straighten those roots to match the rest of my relaxed hair but I realized that the more manipulation I put on it the more susceptible it was to breakage.

I don't fight the newgrowth by trying to comb it dry or fighting it to make it straight. This will most definitely result in breakage. I also realized that the protein/moisture balance becomes critical at this point.

Some other things I've learned:

Airdried hair is not mean't to be combed…for my hair at least. Because it doesn't dry straight and the newgrowth is coily, wavy it's suicide to force a comb thru it.

Condition washes with good softening conditioners and more frequently allows me to "comb" my hair only when soaked with it. I rinse/detangle under the shower stream. As the months go by, I CO wash almost everyday until my next shampoo wash/deep condition. The frequency of the CO wash keeps the roots moisturized and supple especially at the demarcation line. I don't let the roots dry out ever because it will start to get matted.

Hairstyles worn with a fresh touchup I don't even attempt when stretching. I do updo's, buns, twistouts, braidouts, phony ponies, etc. If I do a rollersets I don’t use the magnetics. I switch to the wire mesh rollers with the pins. This allows me to pull the roots taught so they dry a little straighter. If I want it even straighter I apply a little protectant on the roots and go over it once with a flat iron. I do this rarely though.

Honi a touch every 5 months why so long? Any breakage?

When I was relaxing, I would go about 12-14 weeks. I am transitioning to natural now. The absolute must for me is daily CO washes. This helps my new growth so much. Also, I wear a bun or braid after my hair has air dried. I try not to touch it with a comb until the next day's wash. Dry combing is a major no-no.

I agree with this and I think that is a key to stretching, wearing styles that don't require manipulation. I voted over 10 weeks but I usually aim for 10-12 weeks. The only way I can go longer with that is if I'm wearing braids.

You know, strange enough, the closer I get to eight weeks, the more shedding I have. Hair seems to come out left and right. This is just by doing a little tugging on it. The second after I relax my hair, I can pull for days without nearly as much shedding. I have yet to understand this.

A far as breakage, I can see were there may be an increase if you comb hair with new growth w/o caution/moisture and it snaps at the Demacration (sp) line.

Having the right balance between moisture and protein will help to keep the hair from breaking and growing without any problems. The main key to most of the ladies success is the right regimne and products just for your hair. This really makes a difference! I have found if I am consistent with my regimne then my hair is less unruly and hardly ever breaks while stretching. I have just given myself a touch-up last night...I was 11 weeks post relaxer. :D ;)

Yes, for me! Anytime after 16 weeks is breakage city.
Wow!! I cain't even make it to 9 weeks without breakage. Right now, I am getting my touchup done every 8 weeks, but right around that seventh week, sometimes, I start to see breakage.

Just looked at u'r album and u'r hair has made progress, I just wanted to suggest that u try the baggie method to moisture u'r ends they look a little dry only because the hair on the ends is older hair also a little trim looks needed I don't know if u'r streching u'r trims if so u know better than I do about u'r hair just wanted to give a little advice. CONGRATS ON THE PROGRESS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

I think it depends on how you are taking care of your hair and the styles you choose whether you are going to get breakage solely from stretching. Also, people who relax bone straight, or accidentally overprocess are going to have a much harder time.

I started off strenghing from 8-12 weeks :look: this time i went from 3/1/2 months i was kinda worried after seeing lots of matted tangles, but it didnt lead to any bad breakage ,SOON after applyin my retouch everything came out okay! .My next relaxer hopely gonna be 5-6 months i think i got it downpacked yall great!!!;).I usually start using heat around 2 months, then afterwards it every months. righ now focus on CW,DC,LOTS TLC

10 weeks is my new minimum. Even though my grows at an average rate, I don't feel I have enough NG before 10 weeks.

Just be careful with the prev. relaxed hair and the NG. No breakage occurs just normal shedding.

I'm 15 weeks post now. Last time I relaxed I was 10 weeks post. I learned from my last stretch that I definately can't air-dry. My hair is way to fragil when air dried. So yes I incorporate heat into my regimen at this point. I just have to wash my hair less (every 2 weeks). This method has been working so far. I plan to relax in March (at about 22 weeks). Wish me luck:)
