i first relaxed my hair in 1986, i think. i did it for my cousin's wedding. she had to explain to me what it even was...
all the girls did it for the wedding. i've always relaxed my hair 3 times a year. thankfully, i didn't know i was supposed to do it sooner. i was REALLY clueless about hair.

I do the exact opposite. I'm natural and I wonder how my hair would look if I were to relax it again since I know how to care for my hair now.

I think it's natural to think, or be curious about the other.
I just have to look at my mom, she has the same long and beautiful natural hair that I used to have
(same hair types, same lenght). I was good at taking care of my natural hair thanks to my mom, but not my relaxed hair. I had trouble with moisturizing my relaxed hair and keeping the ends healthy before I found this hair forum (at its genesis).

Funny, I was just thinking about this today. Both of my sisters just went natural and they are both having a hard time right now. My oldest sister has been natural for a year and my other sister has been natural for about two and a half years. My middle sister looks really awful with her hair natural and my oldest sister looks super cute. I'd probably fall somewhere in the middle, whatever that would be. That thought alone keeps the relaxer in my hair. I may texturize after I remove my braids though.
When relaxed, I never thought about natural hair. In fact, I depised the thought! Mainly cuz I didn't know how to properly care for it, (new growth anyway).
Now, "all naturale" is all that I can think about. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved
my relaxed hair. However, I've found a greater love in my natural texture. It's amazing how deeply my attitude towards my natural hair has changed now that I understand how to care for it.
I do. a lot. I'm too chicken to do it now but after I reach my hair goal I might start dabbling in lengthening out my touch ups so see if I can get a picture of how I'd look. I dont want to loose lengh. thats my main concern so if it could be done without me loosing length I would be very very very tempted. I love how my newgrowth feels for the most part but I do have bad hair days when I'm like "oh, no!"
No, I remember what i looked like before I started relaxing my hair. But I can get that same look now by just making small braid after I wash and let it airdry. Close enough, when I want the "natural look".
I have thick hair now. But before I relaxed it was super thick! That's why my mom relaxed it in the first place. I remember my hair resisting chemicals the first couple of times! My natural hair intimidates me a bit. Its big and hard to comb through. Until coming to this board I had no idea I could soften my new growth to make it more bearable.
