THOSE WHO BRAID...

Do you trim the "strays" to keep your hair looking neat and tidy? I do because as I wash and co wash my hair often (2-3 times a week) because I work out regularly.

I'm currently at ear length, and I was wondering if trimming the strays too often will stump my growth?

I would imagine so or make your hair pretty uneven if you are trimming with everywash. What I do is, after I've applied my leave-in and braid spray, I pour some EO in my hand and then rub it length of the braids, pull my hair back in a loose ponytail and tie a satin scarf around my head, when I take it off the next morning the braids look neat again. This works for me, but I'm sure there are other methods. One more thing I cowash 1-2x week.

When I first read your post I thought you meant those who braid do they trim up and down the sides to neaten it after getting it done. To this I would say yes, I believe that when you "neaten" it up you are losing hair. However, some people consider it to be dusting and is not really that bad.

I read the first poster's answer and realised that you meant you neaten it up after EVERY shower! IMHO this is WAYYYYY too much triming. I mean, pefectly heathly and long strands could come out during all of the cowashing and now you will be trimming them.

I agree with the other posters. I keep my hair braided the majority of the time and dusting the ones that stick out may make your hair uneven and eventually loosing quite a bit of length. Dreamsicles has the best way to go. Just keep your ends moisturized, and if you wrap your hair in a satin scarf over night it should lay neat.

Thanks all. I don't trim after every wash, but when I do wash my braids they tend to get messy. I've had my hair braided for about two weeks and I've trimmed maybe 3 times?

When I do wash my hair, sometimes it gets messier than other times. I find a braid-out does a good job of fixing that. Or if you put it in a pony tail and tie a scarf, the flyaways tend to lie down and it can pass for tidy hair. Since I have a few hours in the day when I'm just sitting watching TV, I use that time to redo the braids at the top or near a parting that will be showing and just let them cover the really messy ones till I get to them. Or you could just wear your hair in French braids like I do and you won't have to notice how messy it is - and neither will anyone else. (Because of the cold, I wear a woolly cap to work and it's amazing how neat my hair looks when I take it off at the office. ;) ) Also when I wash, I try not to manipulate my braids too much. I focus more on getting my scalp clean and then just gently squeeze the braids as the suds run down them during the rinse. (See below)

And if I don't have time to touch the braids out, I put them in French braids/cornrows and could wear that for a few days:

And when I'm tired of that, I can still wear a braid-out that further disguises just how messy the braids are ;) :

Soun!

I wish you had a Fotki so I can see! I was just talking to someone about the C&G and I have no idea what the rules are. But the growth folks get from that sound AMAZING. Now, what about the edges of the hair (especially in the front) how do you protect the hairline?
I don't particularly like braids on me, but I'd do it if that means I'll gain length (of course with proper care). I need to learn how to do it myself too!

Not me i braid my self i would be scare to do that:eek2::badidea:. i just moisturizer and seal and redo braids that need to be done no trim for me:yep:I MAY CUTT TO MUCH:wallbash:

That is just not wise :nono::nono::nono:

Try getting your braids done more frequently.....makes no sense at all.

i never used to. i was too scared of making my hair uneven. a good trick for braids is dipping them in warm water and adding mousse to slick the strays down . or if they are long braids, use rollers on them and dip them in hot water to curl the ends

I'm old school I put a little Let's Jam on the fuzzy bits if needed then wrap it up tight w/ a scarf, problem solved.

Are you natural or relaxed?

Ok ladies, I get the point I will stop!

Its hard, I hate seeing messy braids! Especially when they start acting up in two weeks! Perhaps I can use mousse, or redo the braids instead of cutting.

Thanks!

Hey!

After I wash my braids, I usually apply an oil on my scalp and massage it. I also take some activator gel and rub it down the length of my braids. It makes my hair look very nice and lays down my hair inside each braid. Ajamericandiva has tips of her modified crown and glory method on this board. I love following her method!

Ok ladies, so I took your advice and stopped trimming! I co washed last night and added a protien leave and mositurized with mango butter. I did most of the strans individually and tied my hair over night and now my braids look new! I think the problem was, I used a stocking cap instead of a silk scarf hence the "strays"

But I am noticing some slight breakage on my hairline. What temple balm do you guys use for hair line breakage? Should I be mositurizing more, or adding more protien (i.e. infusium 23)?

I think the solution to hairline breakage is prevention and changing something - either the way you wear your hair (eg stop pulling it back too tightly), or get the braids redone a little thicker but using less hair per section.

Another thing you have to do is re-braid the hairline as soon as the braids get loose. Nothing yanks hair out of your head like a painfully swinging loose braid.

But I think the safest thing for someone new to braids, who cannot gauge when the additional hair is too heavy for their hairline, is just not to add hair to the hairline. Bangs are so cute to me that I'm sporting bangs in my braids. I twist or braid the front without extensions and CW the hair every morning so it dries hanging down the way bangs should. Washing also ensures that the hair shrinks so it's not in my eyes, and I get the cutest spirals at the ends of my twists. Otherwise you could just cornrow the front section back w/o extensions, and add them to the tails of the cornrows so that they blend in with the rest of the hair.

I think this photo kinda gives you an idea of just how little human hair I attach to each lightly thicker section of my own hair. I am particularly careful to do this at the hairline. And even though I've never had hairline breakage, and I am pretty confident in how I do my braids, I still take breaks from wearing extensions along the hairline every now and then. One can never be too safe.

Thank you very much - I do know what it feels like to have braids hanging "from a thread" from my hair line. I just thought my scalp was tender. This has to be the reason for the breakage.

Thank you!
