Not dumb question at all. It depends on the condition of your hair, If it's bone straight then you may not want to have it curly. The reason is yes although you can keep your straight ends, you would have to wear your hair in a straight style most of the time to avoid breakage. And when your hair does grow out, you will be dealing with 3 different textures which cause alot of breakage, it will be kinky at the roots, curly in the middle and straight on the ends. You can imagine the drama that would create. For more info please check this site www.Jazma.com go to the q&A section it's long but informative. And I'm sure soon enough you'll get tips from curlycurl, Adrienne, & Modelchick to name a few. They really know what they are talking about so please take their advice to heart.

yeah 3 different types would drive me mad

it already drives me insane w/relaxed and new growth

i know hiza is transitioning from relaxed to texturized without chopping off her relaxed hair. ;)

I hate to say it, but after thinking about what I want to do with my hair, I am thinking this way may be the best for me. I think I will transition for the summer just to get 5 months of growth then texturize. Its the happy medium I want. It may not be all natural but I'm not sure if that was my ultimate goal. Just healthier hair..
Thanks for posting this question and everyone's responses!!

This past weekend, I applied a mild texturizer to my natural hair.

When I was relaxed (always about 70 percent straight), I'd just airdry or blowdry my freshly washed hair and it would look 'fluffy'. It resembled a texturized look. I've never been into stick straight hair. Perhaps if you try this, it would be easier to move into a texturizer. I don't think that you really have to chop your hair off. : )
