would like to be able to thicken my hair. What strategies have you found help? I relax my hair only about 3-4x per year.
Cheers.

Relaxing and perming like 3 times a year helped and I used a lot of castor oil. My hair started getting thicker and heavier. It was a marked difference.

Well, I would say stretching your relaxers but I see you already do that, so....

Another option is a good ole' castor oil. For the first year and a half of my journey that stuff took my hair from "She Aight" to "Ga'Damn she thick" :lachen:. No but in all seriousness, castor oil is 1 of my favorite oils for this very purpose.

How I used it a while back:

On scalp 3 to 4 times a week
In my DC's

How I use it now:
To Seal
In my DC's

Give it a try :).

stop relaxing....stretch does help but over time even with the upmost care relxers change the quality of the hair. i have friends had gorgeous relaxed hair but transtioning to natural made them realize that their hair was menat to be even thicker inspite of the care they put in dc-ing and moisture-protein balance.

When using the Castor Oil - you put it all over the hair or scalp and at night?

Well in the beginning of my HHJ I used it ONLY on my scalp, but now I use it to seal my ends as well. Its quite thick so I do mix it with a lighter oil (preferably a light ceramide oil like Grapeseed) to make it more pliable. So technically you can use it for both.

People say henna works... I haven't tried it though
I find that regular protein treatments increase thickness and weight (egg, mayo, molasses, MT etc)

Whenever I did a hard protein treatment, my hair felt thicker and heavier as well. I did that every 4 -6 weeks.

I agree with this. In the past, although I only relaxed 1-2x a year, my hair was still thin and lacking a lot of fullness. IMO if you can really go 3-4x a year with relaxing you could benefit from transitioning to becoming natural.

Now that I am natural, my straightened hair looks a whole lot better.

But....I can understand if you do not want to go natural. Try henna treatments, protein conditioners and castor oil.
