I know there are some ladies out there who have added complications with growing long, healthy hair because of medications they have to take. Maybe we can help each other by posting our regimens about how we are caring for our extra-extra delicate strands.

I am just starting out so I have no hair loss yet, but this is a major side effect of my med. I am natural, so I plan to twist my hair everyweek after a moisturizing treatment and a DC. I will use a protein conditioner monthly. I am also going to avoid heat like the plague. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I am 4a/4b.

Well I dont have medicine induced shedding, but I know tha Garlic conditioners are great to help control that. Also head massages with oils will also help curb some of the shedding.

Choose a delicate shampoo and like you are planning, handle your hair as little as you can.

Twists are a good option. I would personally stay away from cornrows, ponytails and bantu's.

Hope this helped some:)

I am on medication and it does not affect my hair growth but it does effect the strength of my hair and the rate of shedding. I suggest that you try Alter Ego Garlic Treatment for shedding ( It takes a couple of uses to get the effect of it) and using henna for strength. I have very few issues with my meds and my hair since putting these products in my regimen. Also, limiting anything that will weaken the hair for example relaxers, heat, over-manipulation, etc. will also help. Good Luck

I'm on Accutane for acne and taking a very high dose. This is my second time on the drug.

The first time I lost about a third of my hair. This time, I'm nearing the end of my treatment and everything's great. I've only relaxed it twice since I've been on it and I am not combing my hair much.

I've also been using Ultra Sheen DuoTex frequently and have done a couple of Aphogee Treatments. The only time a comb gets near it is during detangling time in the shower with conditioner. I've been using KeraCare Humecto for deep conditioning and a combo of EVOO and Avocado Oil for pre-treatments.

I'm planning to stretch my relaxer at least 4 months. This is month 3. So far so good.

Am I the only one?

No, You're not the only one. I had a serious illness and had to take medicine that affected my hair. In fact, I've probably had more hair drama than anyone else on the board.

My hair seems to be on the mend (fingers crossed) right now. My advice is to find the regime that works for you and keep it. I started trying everything in the world and my hair suffered.

If the medicine is going to affect your hair, it will. Just take the best care of your hair that you can and when you no longer have to take the medicine and it gets out of your system, your hair will return to normal. That's what my doctor told me (and of course I didn't listen). It's hard to see all your hard work growing your hair, go down the drain. You feel you must do something. I tried protein treatment to strengthen, DCR28, shampoos, moisturizers, every & anything that was discussed on the board and I only made things worse.

Keep the faith, Be persistant, and hopeful.

My medication is a chemo drug. Thank God I haven't experienced any hair loss. It makes my hair very dry and brittle. It was breaking like crazy and thought there was no help. It is very resistant to relaxers. I too have tried just about everything. Only to be disappointed hours or days later when my hair would be the same way it was to start with. Thanks to some ladies I found Cathy Howse and have been using her method for a little over a month. I don't use her products just the recipe for the conditoner. I can really see a difference. Find what works for you and stick too it. Keep your head up and hold on to your faith. It will work out.

Ok the Queen of medicine and hair is now on. These are my experences in the past and the long term affects of the diffrent medicines I took and take now.

Antibiotics can cause changes in your hair, espeacially if you relax. Do not get any touch up while taking antibiotics, for some reason usually your relaxer will not come out right.

I currently take blood pressure medicine, gastric medicine and allergy medicine. Also I take a mutivitiamn, Omega 3 and L-Arginine, these help with any defences I may have. Hair, blood or whatever all approve by my doctor.

One time in the past I was taking all the above medicine and I was taking a new gastric medicine to jump start my stomach called Reglan, it was ok at low dosages 2 times a day, but once my doctor increased the doasage amount to 3 times a day, I started losing my hair and itching. So my doctor did a blood test and thinks that Reglan was the reason so between the family and specialist I went back to the lower dosage and no more side affects.

Now my hair is alot thinner and won't hold a curl for nothing in the world, but it is healthy now and still growing long, and getting stronger.

I started methotrexate for my RA. I am hoping my hair won't thin out too much. I am going to research and make sure I can continue to take my hair vitamins along with my other meds.

Yeah! I can keep taking my MSM, biotin, and silica. Hopefully this will help with hair loss and texture change. I am also taking a high dose of folic acid per dr.
