The effects of fish oil on hair

It's an EFA just like Flax Seed Oil-so you should see the same results as if you were taking that. It's also good for heart health and depression.

I was wondering about the benefits of flax seed oil. What type of results should you expect? (Can't you buy the flax seeds and put them in things like salads?)

Well, it is supposed to help "nourish" the hair from the inside..like an "internal lubricant"-I wish I could explain more..maybe some of the others who have taken this can tell you more about the benefits. I haven't taken flax seed oil but I have taken fish oil for the health benefits that it provides. Oh and you can buy the actual flax seeds to eat on salads and other foods...

Thanks for the link, soulchild. That was really informative

Good question, Yung. I just started taking fish oil (mainly because my flax oil is running out and the fish oil was on sale), so I haven't noticed any changes yet. I'll keep you posted.

Just be careful with flax seeds, b/c the oil becomes rancid (toxic) quickly if it's not refrigerated, so flax oil in capsule form is pretty useless. The health benefits are found in the oil. I usually take the seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder to release the oil in the meal. I keep the meal in a baggie in the refrigerator indefinitely and add a spoonful to juice for the health benefit. It wonderful for women, as it regulates peaks and dips in estrogen. Aids w/the symptoms of PMS, regulates cycles, etc. It's also a wonderful source of natural fiber.

Most hair and nail vitamins have fish oil, I've used Viviscal and am currently using Phytophanere which both worked to promote hair growth and health.

I keep my flax oil in the freezer. It stays fresher and the consistancy makes it much easier for me to take.

how much fish oil miss brown or how many capsules

1000 mg in the morning
1000 mg in the evening
= 2000 mg total

How much does your derm have you on?

well, let me testify. i bought a suppliment of fish oil and linseed oil that was processed in a powder with added vit. C (its by a british company called omega) and i started taking about 3000mgs a day - and within two days my skin turned around. Normally it was spotty, but now its a much improved even tone, and with this, i'm now encouraged to take it daily.

I don't know about hair yet, but i assume that it will allow it to be more supple, pliant and less prone to drying. I do hope to see results in a couple of months.

that's an interesting take on flaxseeds, sengschick. I think that i'm going to start taking mine in a powder. Thanks for that.

yours

ana

I prefer flaxseed oil and ground flaxseeds to fish oil. Flaxseed oil has more Omega 3 which is what we all need. I agree Sengschick that the capsules are useless UNLESS they are refrigerated just like the liquid. And they are way more expensive. I only buy the capsules (take 14 of them to equal 1 tablespoon of oil!) if I'm traveling. The ground seeds (3 TBS = 1 TBS of oil)are very inexpensive and good.

Thanks Isis! I forgot to mention that! The recommended dosage is a tablespoon of the oil per day, regardless of the form it's taken in. I went to a presentation on flax seed use as an alternative medicine. I learned that you should a.) introduce it to your system systematically/incrementally over the course of a few weeks, b.) two tablespoons of meal is equivalent to one tablespoon of oil and c.) toasting the seeds releases the oil more readily (if you are going to add it to foods without grinding). Isis says 3 tablespoons, so I'm not sure which is correct, but having more flax oil or more bulk fiber couldn't do any of us any harm!!

Also, don't purchase pre-ground seeds either b/c the health benefit of the oil is lost and always buy organic seeds!!!

I prefer fish oil just for the simple fact that I read that flax oil converts to a form fish oil is already in and bout time it does it becomes less suffecient. You need way more flaxseed oil than fish oil to get the same results. Im taking 4 capsules a day. My derm said its better than any other oils. He recommends other oils for women only because of the hormonal effects.

I take 2000mgs of flaxseed oil and 4000mgs of fish oil as a part of my vitamin regime- I don't refrigerate and my capsules work just fine.

Both Fish oil and Flaxseed contain high amounts of Omega 3s. Without a full dissertation on the differences between the Omega 3 (long chain (fish oil) vs. short chain (flax)). We need both and our bodies cannot not produce them, thus the term essential fatty acids (EFAs). So ideally you should eat fish and flax seeds /flaxseed oil.

I’m slacking in the supplements department but getting ready to embark on my own EFA challenge.

I’d like to recommend The Omega Rx Zone : The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil, a book by Barry Sears for an good review on the benefits of Fish Oil.

Hemp oil is also a good source.

I think vevster mentioned something similar to what i wrote about flaxseed having to convert to the stuff thats already in fish oil.
