I took a tour of one of the many Canadian/U.S. border crossings. The federal agent/tour guide told the group about an incident that happened at the Detroit crossing. That happens to be the largest northern border crossing for trucks and goods shipments.

There was a mislabeled truck shipment. What was inside was fake Paul Mitchell shampoo. The government seized it, tested it, and found that the counterfeit hair products were full of harmful toxins not meant for human use.

All of this is to say, please be careful what you buy. And never intentionally buy bootleg hair or personal body items. What could be harmless fake Chinese MAC makeup or discount Paul Mitchell shampoo could actually kill you.

Thank you for this PSA. I don't like bootlegging or being cheap with anything that goes on my skin or in my body. Yes fake versions of makeup can be very harmful as well as haircare. Man that is very scary to read about, the not meant for human use part.

I remember having breakout from the bootlegs deodorant that used to be sold at the flea markets. The ones that are roll on and go for 10 for 5$ or something like that. The breakout took weeks to heal. never again.

Asian stores in Texas are notorious for selling counterfeit products.

I came in here thinking this thread was about hair products not getting through customs LOL! Was about to come in here with a story of a lady yelling in french and hysterically crying when her conditioner was confiscated.

Thanks for the info @krissyhair Also I learned from a PM instructor that their products can only be sold in liscenced salons. So when you see them at random BSS/drug stores, there's a possibility that they're fake. I had a friend who used their conditioner that she got from a grocery store and her hair stuck together.

That's why you have to be careful. Try getting products straight from the salon, or skin care from the aesthetician.

I always wondered how Wegmans or Wal-Mart or other grocery stores carry salon products.

But I trust Wegmans not to sell me anything toxic.
