Hi ladies,
I'm new to this forum and i'm hoping you'all will help me out.
This is my scenario....I currently have a wavenouveau, but i wear it straight (roller set) most of the time. I want to switch to a relaxer and i really don't want to cut all of my hair off. I'm thinking i could wear braids for a few months and then apply a relaxer ONLY to the new growth. My hair type is 4b and healthy for the most part besides occasional shedding. Any experiences you care to share???

Hey newbie,
Are you sure you want to go completely straight, because you may want to have the options of changing you style from wavy/curly textured to straight. Once your relaxed straight you may not have any waves or curls at all, think about it first, do the braids and wait to see you may even like your natural texture, just don't rush. hth

"Do not use on hair that has been treated with Ammonium Thioglycolate."
Even though your newgrowth may not be treated with this chemical you have
to be careful of putting a relaxer near the already treated hair.

I've had a few friends switch from wave nouveau to a relaxer and they all had to cut off the hair processed with wave nouveau.

I relaxed my hair from wave nouveau about 14 years back and I didn't have any major problems. But unfortunately, I don't remember which relaxer my stylist used. I know products change over time, so I'm not sure how that would work right now.
Hope you find something that works well for you.

Lucia, I think i want to go completely straight, i'm tired of the curly look. Plus i'm tired of poeple calling my hair jheri curl........I chose that look back then because it was suppose to be maintainance free and to some degree it is, but i'm at a point in my life where i want to look more updated and i;ve been getting roller sets and wear is straight for the most part. I think i'll take you advice though and wear braids for a few months and then decide what to do. Thanks for your advice.

please be careful. I think you should have a pro do this for you. I would hate to see you have badly damaged hair like I did when I tried to switch from a w/n to a relaxer. The braids sound like a great idea. Maybe you should grow out yr wave nouveau that way, just to be safe. Welcome to the site!

At least 8 months of braids and twisted hairstyles. That should give you the new growth you desire, and then it won't be so bad to part with the w/n hair. I would suggest big trims in between braid switch ups. If you talked with your professional stylist they'll tell you that a perm needs to be done on virgin hair. That means no wave nouveau. :ohwell: A question for you? Did you have a relaxer b4 the w/n, or was that done on virgin hair too? HHG

Littleaudie, to answer your question yes i did have a relaxer before putting in the wave nouveau, but i also had new growth. After the wavenouveau was put in, the stylist trimmed the ends. You are right i think i'll do the braids for about a year and then maybe it won't be so bad. Thanks:)
