How long after you relax your hair can you go swimming ?

What is the difference between swimmers shampoo and neutralizing shampoo/conditioner.

Thanks

Really, well alright then !!!!

Anky what do you use to rinse the chlorine out??

Can I use neutralizing shampoo, I don't want to by anything new...not shampoo anyways:look:

I'm not exactly certain of the difference between swimmers shampoo and neutralizing shampoo. I believe neutralizing shampoo has something to do with the chemicals from a relaxer. But swimmers shampoo is normally just some type of clarifying shampoo. I use Nexxus Aloe Rid or Kenra Clarifying. I suggest you wear a plastic shower cap ALONG WITH a swimming cap before you swim. If FOR SOME REASON, you can't use those, then wet your hair completely before you get into the pool. That way less chlorine will get in your hair.

A few answers/tips:
1. Neutralizing shampoo returns your hair to the proper pH levels after relaxer (I think it's alkaline)
2. Clarifying has elevated acid levels to wash away residue, build-up, etc.
2. To lessen the absorbtion of chlorine, wet hair and apply conditioner prior to swimming

Ion has an excellent line of swimmers' shampoo - it is designed specifically to get chlorine out of the hair and has a different function than neutralizing shampoo.

You can use a conditioning hair mask or oil to coat your hair before the plastic AND swim cap.

If you cannot shampoo immediately, at least try to rinse and then shampoo as soon as you get home. If you do the coating, covering, shampooing, conditioning after each swim, your relaxed hair should be fine.

I had an experience (age 11) with going swimming the day after a fresh relaxer and I lost so much hair. I had a bald patch in the back of my head. :(

Now that I am older and understand hair chemistry, I see that going swimming with a fresh relaxer is similar to relaxing and coloring too close together. (chlorine=bleach)

Wow, I did not know this, thanks for sharing.

Though I'm no longer relaxing, because I loved swimming so much so often in the summer, I never relaxed my hair during the summer to avoid mishaps.
I do wet my hair with fresh water and apply a serum to my hair beforehand. I find this works better than conditioner because it took it longer to wear off in the water and it didn't leave any residue like conditioner does.
