Why does my hair look thin and stringy after flat ironing? I have relatively thick hair. It's in good condition. I have not had a trim for 13 weeks and it's been 7 weeks since my last relaxer. I normally relax every 6 to 8 weeks and my hair acts kinda funky when it needs a relaxer. It gets hard to manage and difficult to comb. I use a Remington T-Series Teflon Coated Tourmaline Ceramic Flat Iron, 1 inch with Beyond the Zone Turn up the Heat styling treatment. Is it just time for a trim or do I need to use a different flat iron, a lower heat setting or a different heat protector? It wasn't like this when I first began flat ironing, just started like the last two or three times. I only flat iron one or twice every other month. It's not a weekly thing, all other times I rollerset.

are you using this in freshly shampoo'ed hair (or co-washed)? what about after a DC? are you using any leave-in or setting lotion? are you combing through or detangling any?

Hair was co-washed and DC. I did detangle and used Infusium 23 leave-in and Roux 619. I used Nairobi foam wrap lotion. I used Organice Root Stimulator Olive Oil Conditioning Pak (yellow package) for DC. Now, I'm thinking maybe I used to many products. Maybe my hair is coated?

So you never really flat ironed before? Maybe you're one of those people whose hair hates heat even w/ heat protectant. Did you primarily rollerset before you started flat ironing? It's probably looking thin because of heat damage

nursing it back to health and protecting the ends (i would say cut the ends as an absolute LAST resort!)...moisture, DC, and protein.... listen to your hair and the ends and it'll all work out...

I think you were onto something sometimes too many products makes flat ironed hair look stringy. If it was fluffy before the products this may be it, your hair is weighed down, next time try a light heat protectant like Nexxus and i have a feeling your hair will not look stringy HTH!
