I'm confused about how to style long hair into a bob as shown. Can anyone explain a bit more in detail the "tucking and securing" mentioned in the caption? I don't understand how it's done without looking silly - although it looks great in the picture. Also someone mentioned elsewhere that Amerie's new "haircut" might be done the same way. Styling my hair like this would be welcome relief from the daily bun. TIA
Strands: No Cut Required

A Beautiful Bang
For this look, Yusef relied on the art of illusion. Taking Michele’s hair from ear to ear, he tucked it away at the nape and used hairpins to secure it. Yusef then applied a control paste to help mold the hair into its bob shape without weighing it down. Finally, he straightened her sweeping bangs with a flat iron.

Oooo!... Now that is a nice look. ITA it would be nice to do this instead of a bun. Thanks for posting this.

Sorry I can't give any advice on how to tuck the hair, but I am interested in what the other ladies have to say.

This might work:

Secure the very ends of your hair in an elastic band, about 1 inch from the bottom of your hair . Then taking the elastic in your hand, begin rolling it under and up, towards your nape. As you roll up, the hair should kind of spread out in a bob shape. When you get to the desired length of your bob, secure the "roll" with hairpins to the nape of your hair.

I hope that made sense.

HairPhoenix: re. your siggy, you probably do have two different hair textures. Most of us do.

Thanks, myco. Using an elastic would definitely make the roll-up easier to "tuck and secure". I should really stop wondering and just do it already!

Here's Amerie's new do (right) compared to the previous one. I prefer this look to Michele's actually, but even without cutting to bob length, I'd still need to add some layers.

ETA It looks likes one of the layers on the left is pinned up - it is visibly longer than the "bob".

I think Amerie's bob looks like more fun because of the layers. There's more room for error if you can't get the tuck completely smooth, too.

I was thinking that I will have to wait until I'm closer to 100% natural to see what my natural hair is really like. I have about 3 1/2" of ng now. We'll see if I need to change my type in my siggy further down the road.

Thanks for the info, ladies.

I used to do this same style back when i was in high school, but of course my hair was not as long as the rest of you lovely ladies. It was a great way to give the illusion of shorter hair. Elastic band on the ends is the best way to go.

Hmmm...food for thought....I wonder if you can secretly do the baggie method under there as well??? ....hmmmm:D

Wow, I used to do this style years ago! It was always easier to do when my hair was curled at the ends. Banding the ends is your best bet. Once you pin it, try fanning it out until you get the look you want. Long layers or bangs are perfect for blending into or over the "bobbed" section.
