I want to try the Caruso ion hairsetter, but I'm wondering if it'll cause the same damage as a regular curling iron I really don't want to loose the length I've gained. Any first hand experiences?

Nope and nope. My Caruso's are one of the best things I've ever done for my hair. Last week I used them every single day, no damage, no breakage. My curls were soft and shiny and my hair was nice and moisturized from all the steam. After I took out the rollers I applied a little jojoba oil to seal in all that moisture, fingercombed the curls, put on a headband and rolled out. I got lot's of compliments too.;)

mine too, I love them, I usually airdry my hair and then blowdry on low and set my hair on them, I have a album in my fotki with pics.

I just purchased the caruso ionic system. Can you airdry your hair, skip the blowdry step, go straight to the caruso rollerset and get decent results? I have not used a blow dryer in a long time.

I do. I airdry (in a rollerset to smooth) and then use my Caruso rollers. I don't own a blowdryer. In my avatar, this style was done with Caruso rollers, medium sized rolled in a spiral. I use end papers with mine for a smoother set. :)

I've used these steam rollers for a long time and my hair has only thrived with this extra moisture. :yep:

What products can I use before setting the hair to achieve a firmer/smoother set? Or are you all just using the rollers alone?

I love them. I too air dry and set them with end papers. The difference in heat is that curling irons are a "dry heat" vs the "steam heat" in the steam rollers. I have been using them for about a year now and have not experienced any damage. Good Luck!

I recently start using them and love the way my curls feel.

No damage at all.

I can only use them on flatironed hair though.

I am a texlaxed 4b.

They help greatly with daily styling if I don't feel like ponytailing it.

Do you guys only use them on clean hair or on two day old hair? I get my hair washed at the salon every weekend, is steam rolling it in the middle of the week a no-no?

I ordered the Vidal Sassoon Ion Steam Roller last night, I'm hoping it's as good as the Caruso but for less.

I have been using them on clean hair and a few days after. I shampoo every 3 days so my hair never really gets too dirty.

I have only used them 2 or 3 times but I don't see any reason to believe that the y would be damaging. I used them on flat ironed hair though. My hair is to short to be air drying and such.

I second that! Love love love love love my Caruso curlers and do not want anything else! It is definitely a keeper. I wish I had the good sense I have now when I was in high school when the first version (the one you had to add salt to- but it was still good) came out. I had those and didn't use it as much. Back then I was addicted to the curling iron because I honestly didn't know any other way.

I use my rollers on fresh hair and sometimes after flatironing to refresh the curls like 3 days later I use the steam rollers

I am curious about this as well. Have any of you caruso ladies used leave-ins or other products with the caruso system to set your curls? If so, what did you use. :)

I dont use anything to set them, I am kind of scared to put anything on my hair that will make it wet with these rollers it will take a long time to dry, because the original way they are used you dont have to sit under the dryer but if you add a setting lotion of something like that if you want to dry faster you would. Plus the rollers are sponge and I have never heard of using them on wet or semi damp hair.

I airdry loose and then use huge Caruso rollers to get just a slight curl for the results in my sig. I never use a blow dryer or flat iron.

Also, someone else asked about using it on fresh cleaned or days old hair ... you can use it on both. The steam will only benefit, not damage.

I do think you get better body with fresh hair, though.

I would love to do this. I airdry a rollerset since I too don't use blow dryers or a flat iron and I've used Carusos on my hair afterwards. How are you airdrying your hair loose Synthia? Wouldn't your hair be very frizzy before rolling it with the jumbo Caruso rollers? Are you combing your hair first? TIA. :)

It's really weird. Nearly everyone on this board has negative experiences airdrying loose and say not to comb air dried hair. But I do both with positive results and I have 4a hair.

I CW daily and deep condition 1 to 2 times weekly so that keeps my hair 'smooth and limber'. When I get out of the shower from a wash my hair is pretty straight and not really tangled (I relax pretty straight with Optimum no-lye regular). If I think I'm going to get tangled I'll use a creme rinse.

After the shower, here's what I do:
1. Towel Blot. But on a silky robe so my hair can rest on it without stress. Air dry half way dry without combing. I shake it periodically to sling water out keep strands separated.

2. At the half way point I smooth in a quarter size of a moisturizing creme based leave-in. And comb through for the first time detangling. I think cremes keep away frizz. (I used to use a shine spray at this point, but am now laying off cones. That really elminated any frizz, as did any serums.).

3. Then I sling and air dry and after about an hour total my hair is dry enough to put some rollers in. (even if the roots aren't completely dry I have been known to just curl the ends so I can get to work -- waking up at 7 a.m. to wash and getting to the office 10 minutes away around 9 or 9:15). If I'm having a frizz problem, I'll spritz a light leave-in conditioning spray (many optimum or Robert Craig and that should cure it after it dries in about 5 mintues)

In this way I can do my hair fresh each morning without a huge time investment (cuz while the hair is taking an hour to dry you can do other things...I get on the hair board :). But you can do all kinds of stuff as long as you don't work up a sweat. I find blotting well and not putting anything on until half dry helps you dry in an hour).

Sometimes I do cheat and sit in front of a high, cool fan if I'm running late (like letting the wind dry your hair). That cuts time to about 20 minutes but can give you sniffles.

If my hair dries a little frizzy, and that's been known to happen occasionally, the caruso curlers can actually smooth it. And I can always do a tighter Caruso set then wrap under a scarf for 10 minutes to loosen and smooth while I dress (the body heat under the scarf helps smoothing).

Is my hair as smooth as with a flat iron? no. But it's straight enough for me for daily wear. I like it. :p

You do this before going to work in the morning?! Amazing! Thank you so much Synthia for sharing your technique and regimen! I am curious now to see what my hair would do, even though it's not relaxed straight like yours. I've never really used my Caruso curlers to smooth out my frizzy hair... :scratchch

I use to have a Caruso set in the 90's and now I own the Vidal Sasson one and they both work the same.
