Good or bad? I'm thinking about getting some from ulta.com. I used to use it a year ago and thought it made my hair stronger and shinier.

No one here is mentioning it as part of a regimen ... so can I gather that it's considered to be an undesirable?

Thanx.

i dont think it's undesirable. I use it for rollersets and i actually have some at home right now. The thing is, I haven't done rollersets in months, but when I start doing them again starting December, I will be using the spray-on placenta again. That's my "setting lotion" if you can call it that. It detangles my hair well and it does make it stronger too. So go ahead, you could use it as a leave-in since that's what it really is :)

Kewl.

Your hair is really healthy so I'm sure you wouldn't use something that had adverse effects.

I've heard it's the most potent form of protein ... and if it's good for babies, I'm sure it'd be nourishing for me. But I seem to remember this product being the target of controversy for some reason.

I actually don't remember any bad effects from it. I just ran out, didn't buy more and suddenly forgot about it until now...

happens to all of us. u use a great product, run out, don't buy anymore and u wonder why you stopped since it was good on your hair. I know i will be using it again :)

The Hask Placenta did wonders for me stops breakage and shedding immediately for me, haven't brought it in a while and didn't plan on purchasing it again since reading a thread about hormones in hair products and how it can affect us overall. I believe the post was about black hair care products that are bad for the hair, maybe i can search for it and bump it up so you can read it. But as usually something good is always bad in the end,:ohwell: .

Edit to add the title of the thread is "Warning about Black Hair Care Products" I just bumped it up. HTH

I use to use this when I had braids. Someone told me about it. I did have a lot aof growth when I took down my braids.

I love the Hask Placenta.... But it is on the taboo list.. It does wonders for me the last 2 weeks of my stretch between relaxing.... That's when I get a lot of shedding and this is the only product that I have found to get me through it.... I gave it up but not totaly...

LadyZ, thanks for bumping up that thread.

I did read the report... pretty scary on the surface.

But I searched in vain for proof that there is a correlation.

Breastcancer.org suggests there is no proof yet. And no one knows how high the rate of incidence is. I do believe it can cause girls to develop faster ... can it definitely lead to breast cancer? ... i don't know.

I guess it can, just as well as aspartame (sp?) in diet colas ... and people continue to woof those down. I guess you just have to choose your poison, so to speak. We live in a society where there are so many environmental risks.

I think I'm going to use it... but try to get it on my hair strands, not the scalp (as if that's really possible) and continue my healthy eating in hopes of combating any risk.
The urban legends site said they are still researching this correlation. Honestly there's not a whole lot on the Web ... it seems like the same news reports was just recycled and recycled over and over again making it look like a widely reported truth.

I don't doubt breast cancer is higher in black girls/women than in other ethnicities ... but the link to topical placenta seems speculative ... I mean I would think lifestyle and nutrition (soul food?) could contribute a great deal....

My inexpert 2 cents...

Well u are right about choosing your own poison, and your freedom to use whatever you choose. I decided to give it up after the fact that doctors prescribe way less hormones than what you will find in topical hair solutions. especially placenta is known to contain a high amount of hormones. I wish i could remember the % that i read, but it was a few months back, i just remember not to use it anymore.

I agree it works, but I won't use it because of the health concerns. I used to use it years ago, then started again earlier this year. Suddenly my periods became very irregular (as in like, twice a month). The doctor couldn't find any reason why. I read about the problems with using hair products containing hormones (like placenta) and stopped using it. Lo and behold my periods became regular again and two months later I was pregnant! :D :D :D Coincidence? :perplexed

Estrogen is a known carcinogen. This isn't just about breast cancer, but cancer in general and other effects hormone disruptors can have on the body (and the environment). That doesn't mean if you use placenta you will automatically have problems. But it means you raise your risk. It is up to each individual to weigh their own risks and benefits and act accordingly.

I don't use placenta products, but if I did, I might be leery of using a spray. This would mean that not only would I be subjecting my skin to it, but also breathing it into my lungs. I have no idea whatsoever what the implications of that are, but I don't think I would want to risk it. Just my thoughts.

Like anything else, stay aware and educated and do what you think is right for you.

i wouldn't go near it. i get enough carcinogens from the polluted air around me. even the word itself makes me cringe. that stuff is chock full of hormones from god knows which animal/human. :ill:

Damn. You guys are making it difficult to place my order .... I was thinking topical ... how much is that going to hurt it's not like i"m ingesting it ... but now ...I"m having a hard time believing this would be a wise decision. :(

I guess I must have missed something. Why is placenta on the taboo list but horse growth oil (MTG) is not on the taboo list. At least placenta has been marketed for human use!

Placenta Products are considered "taboo" because of the hormones (namely Estrogen), that they contain. The amount of Estrogen used in some Placenta shampoos/conditioners/treatments are higher than that of birth control pills. That much Estrogen was proven to be harmful to the body. Plus, the sources of the hormones are sometimes unknown. We assume that these companies are using human placental hormones, but this isn't always true.
MTG doesn't contain Estrogen (not really sure if it contains hormones at all). Sulfur seems to be the main active ingredient/catalyst for growth in MTG.

i see some of us still believe in the FDA  oh well, at least the pharamaceutical companies will be laughing all the way to the bank when they sell all those cancer drugs! oops, i mean ANTI cancer drugs.

According to some of the articles I've read on Breast Cancer sites, the more hormones a person is exposed to during their lifetime the greater their risk of developing cancer. Hormones are not the only cause but they are believed to be one of the causes. Estrogen is a known carcinogen and placenta contains estrogen.

We can't escape all of the carcinogenic chemicals in the environment, in food, and even in the beauty and household products we use but its better to stay away from product ingredients that we know expose us to more carcinogens.

I've thrown a lot of my products away over the past few months due to possibly carcinogenic ingredients and am still in the process of getting rid of more. It's really pained me to get rid of some of them but it's worth it.

Not too long ago a woman's chance of developing breast cancer was 1 in 8 now it's 1 in 7 and with all of the pollutants in our environment and chemicals in our food the odds will probably be even greater in the next few years.

After recently discovering that a family member has breast cancer I'm making an effort to get rid of products that have known carcinogens.

Wow!!! They've cleaned that one up. I've seen a lot of placental tissue, but never saw one that clear. Cool!!!!

Hey miracle. Thanks for the reply I didn't even realize that placenta had hormones in it. I know that placenta is made from cow placenta in case anyone was wondering. The fact that placenta has more hormones than birthcontrol is a deal breaker for me. I have heard of several people having systs and other ovarian problems from birth control alone.

does all this matter if you're spraying it on the HAIR? and not on the scalp? i dont know what u used it for, but i never sprayed it on my scalp... after i separated my hair into sections to rollerset it, then i'd spray the placenta on the hair shaft and mostly the tangled parts and the ends... and hair is dead anyway... so those hormones aren't going into the body.

It probably wouldn't be as harmful just spraying it on the hair as opposed to having it on the scalp or using a Placenta shampoo/conditioner, but you still have to touch your hair to rollerset it. So anything on your hair will also be on your hands. Unless you wear gloves, your skin is still in contact with the hormones.

well think about it this way, the things you put on your scalp are abosorbed into your skin. if you use a bad perm, the hair that grows later will be damaged. if you use something like wildgrow or mtg or some other potion your hair will grow more. if you put a nicotine patch on your arm it will help you quit smoking, it doesn't help your arm quit smoking, it helps your whole body. i think the way carcinogens work is if they are near your body they can cause cancer, they don't have to be near the site to cause cancer.
