I would first make sure I've detangled thoroughly, then I would use a protein treatment followed by a deep moistirising one

detangle with a good detangler or oil, cowash, protein treatment, moisturizing dc treatment for at least 30-45mins with some heat.

I detangle. Treat my scalp with some peppermint mixed in oils. Shampoo And deep condition.

I do a hard protein a week later. I'm always afraid I néed to make sure the shed hair is all gone so my fine hair doesn't dred up.

For me I can imagine w/ the weave my hair wasn't getting real clean
Detangle
Clarify w/ mud wash
Protein
Moist dc

I tried something new. I haven't relaxed yet so I'm not sure of the outcome yet. I had my sew in for 8 weeks. I cowashed every week or two. When I took it out my new growth was matted. I decided to wash my hair before I took down the braids. Then my sister used her fingers to detangle. I will not wash my hair or put a comb in it until the relaxer. I just made sure or knots and tangles are gone. If this turn out well, I will keep the next sew ins for three months. I will braid my hair different though to avoid matting.

So I prepooed with EVOO and Giovanni smooth as silk conditioner
Clarified
Joico K pak treatment for about 5-7 min
Conditioned for 30 min with ORS replenishing conditioner

Imho----Make sure you are moisturizing those braids in between weekly. I would suggest a spray moisturizer once a week like rosewater and glycerin, care free curl, Shea moisture mist or some other softening type light mist spritz. I would also suggest getting all the shed hair out before you wet the hair after takedown.

Just went through this with my sis. She actually wore her install for nearly 5 months...with few washings or moisturizing in between though :perplexed

I prepoo'd her hair (using Chicoro's mix) under a baggie for a few hours...this helped greatly with the detangling I did immediately following.

Then I co-washed her hair with VO5 and detangled one last time, to make sure I got all the shed hair out before I shampooed.

Then we did a clarifying shampoo, followed by a medium PT (joico), then a moisturizing DC.

A week or 2 later, she did a Aphogee 2-step PT, followed by moisturizing DC.

HTH!

I do use a curl activator once or twice between washed. I'm going to try my own spray bottle next time though. My sister did get all the shed hair out. She just pull them out using her fingers.

I have to cosign with the bolded. Trust me, using your fingers to detangle most likely did NOT get out all the shed hair. That's asking for a setback right there, esp if you just rely on finger combing before a relaxer.

@ ediese is it possible to co-co sign?lol!

To OP.....if you had matting after 8 weeks, I wouldn't try to go 12 weeks until you determine a regimen that allows you to NOT have matting. Using myself as an example, I can't go 12 weeks no matter what I do. This is after years of trial and error. I shed too much.

I suggest going 8 weeks. Try the new spray bottle or another moisturiZer. And also using a WIDE tooth comb after finger combing to remove shed hair. If you do that with no matting, then increase to 10 weeks. Wait until you get your perfect regimen before you increase weeks in a weave. You want to avoid a setback at all costs. ;)

Ediese I'm aware I may not have pulled all the shed hair which is why I will not wash before I relax. I feel like the rest of the shed hair will just come out when my hair dresser comb my hair when she is rinsing out the relaxer. Historically I loose so much hair when I wash my hair after taking down braids. I'm hoping this method helps to minimize breakage. My previous set backs have been due to breakage so I'm crossing my fingers...

@havilland It make sense to try the new braiding pattern for 8 weeks before increasing my stretching time. My sister said she could tell my matting on the back was due to the cornrows ending at the name area and since the hair is shorter way at the edges of the area that caused them to mat. So next time I'm planing on braiding the edges at the nape area accross so even the short hair are braided.

FemmeFatale, as the other ladies have mentioned, it is absolutely necessary to detangle your dry hair BEFORE washing. I suggest using a light oil to help assist you with detangling, nothing water based because that can "lock" in the tangles. I have fine, dense hair that's prone to tangles and this method has helped me retain the length and health of my hair through several installs.

So I want to treat my hair for a good two weeks before getting a touchup, conditioning treatments (protein and moisture) every 3 days. I just feel like my hair needs all the TLC after being braided and hidden for 3 months.

Keeping a weave in for 5 months is bold but if the scalp is catered to and I have done 3 months and I am ordering some hair from silkbaseclosures.com but I am going to sew it onto a wig cap so I can keep my hair braided for several weeks and sew the wig on over it and I don't have to worry about placing the tracks back the way the were when I cut the hair (IF I cut the hair) How much growth did your sister get/retain?
