Just thought I would bump this thread to get some convo started and with all the attn surrounding Chris Rock's documentary and what he was talking about in the movie and on Oprah about the source of our weave...

I love weave but wants some diff views....

Does the connection between weave being used for religious purposes make it immoral or unethical b/c some of the hair is actually coming from BABIES (2-3 yrs old)??

Let the games begin....

Yep. I've seen the articles about this. These women are freely offering their hair to their Gods, and in some parts of India, they get paid for it. I don't mind wearing it. It's not like they were forced to cut it. I pay good money for my weaves. lol

Girl we I came to put this post up I thought of u b/c I was looking at one of ur weaves earlier lol

It says in the bible that we should not have anything to do with something that has been sacrifised to idols or gods. I don't tell my clients anymore to get remy hair. I still do peoples weaves, I just don't tell them to go get that remy hair anymore.

I find it it disgusting and sad that women are willing to put that hair in their heads. It just doesn't sit right with me...

Well, I learned something new. I never tried to research that before.
I have never used remy hair and won't in the future.

Now, knowing that the Remy hair was a religious sacrifice, I seems unethical that the hair is sold for profit.

It seems like it should be burned or burried or saved somewhere.

Which is part of why I won't wear human hair extensions. Not so much because it came from someone else's head, but because of the exploitation.

It could always be worse, I guess. I hear a lot of the Caucasian hair extensions are from robbed graves. Now that's just :nono:

Mook's Hair--------- Your hair is to fly. If I could have done that with my hair, I would have never dreaded. I love love love my dreads but oh man man, I love your hair!

I have never heard that before! OMgoodness!:perplexed

I feel the same way about weave, sweat shops, exploitation, and slaughterhouses...sometimes it just can't be avoided no matter what you do. So as long as I'm still eating meat, shopping at the mall, and driving my car, I have no issue with buying some Indian lady's hair.

In India women donate their hair as part of their religious sacrifice. Their temples sell the hair and use the profits to fund the villages, temple, etc. There is no sweatshop and no women are being chased down to have their hair cut off lol

Also, "remy" hair can be from any race, texture...it is the term used to describe the collection process meaning that the hair is kept in the same direction at the time of donation and the cuticle is intact. Hair that is dontated to Locks of Love is "remy" hair. Less expensive hair that isn't remy is loose hair that is collected off of the floor and sewn on a weft..a coating is put on the hair so that it feels smooth. After about one or two washes it comes off so you get the horrible tangles, matting.

Yup...tis true. I find this quite exploitive. Hair has ALWAYS been bought or given in this case by the poorest of women and sold at HUGE profits. Not cool to me at all. Of course, it's not Black people being exploited this time, so I guess that makes it OK.

(In the Victorian era, it was African hair they were using for "rats" (ie hair to build around)).

I recall something similar to this being posted before. The general consensus was "so what?" As with blood diamonds, most people didn't care . . .

I don't know any 2-3 year old whose hair is long enough to provide the hair for weave (how many 3 year olds have you seen with 22inch hair?). I have seen girls as young as 7 in a documentary...but hair is hair...if it's really exploitative then it doesn't matter if you're taking it from a 7 year old or a 77 year old.

And anyway, most people aren't buying real Indian hair. The hair in the BSS can have a few strands of real hair (Indian or otherwise) in it and they can call it "human" or "remy" or whatever. But the hair is made from many different materials, mostly plastic (some animal like yak). It's like a product can be called a "natural" product even if the only thing natural in it is water.

this is why i stay away from weaves, the thought of wearig someonelses hair is just not okay with me :nono:.thats why i'm here, to grow my own:yep:

I would be okay with it if these women and girls were compensated in some way, but I've heard many times that none of them see a dime. Not that one is to really expect to receive something in return when offering a sacrifice, but the temples are apparently making so much money from this.

I'm done with human hair weaves. :D
