Hi, I've been lurking on this boar for a couple weeks now and have finally decided to register since I'm in need of some serious help.

1) I recently started swimming twice a week and was swimming once a week sicne July of this year. Because of this I've decided to stop relaxing my hair(atleast temporarily). Unfortunately I'm starting to see some signs of breakage. I wet my hair and put deep conditioner in it b/4 putting on my swimcap and jumping in the pool and I wash it after I get home. I used to blow dry after washing when I only swam once a week but now that I'm doing it twice a week I let it airdry. What can I do to stop the breakage? I apply Aveda 'brilliant' in the pump while my hair is damp and try to sleep with a satin scarf every night(it always comes off at some point in the night:( ) but like I said I notice that my hair is starting to break and it is becoming very difficult to comb (last relaxer 7/12/03 ) what should I do?

2) If I'm going to transition(atleast temporarily) what is the best way to go about it? I have fine hair that gets really curly in the back andsomewhat wavy/curly when I air dry it. I tried reading some of the previous threads oon transitioning but like the title says I don't have that much time to surf. I'm studying for the GMAT.

For the breakage you mey need a protein treatment. You should do a search on protein and you will find many recomendations. Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner is popular. This can be found at health food stores. Also any conditoner that says 'reconstructor' on it such as Aphogee Reconstructor, which can be found at Sally's

Since you have decided to stop relaxing for now you need to make sure that you keep your hair moistorized, especially at the point where your relaxed hair and natural hair meet as this area is prone to breakage.

Also, since your satin scarf comes off you may want to try a satin pillowcase instead.

Good luck to you and I know you will get lots more advice from everyone

Thanks.

o/t: how do I enable html? I keep getting red x's for all the buttons and I don't see anythuing that llows me to enable HTML in my options.

I don't know enough to claim authority on the subject but I wondered if you use a swimmer's shampoo. Nexxus Aloe Rid is specifically made for regular swimmers and when I did a search online to find out more about it, I found a review by a lady who's tried it as well as Nexxus Assure. She wasn't too crazy about Aloe Rid because she didn't get a lot of suds, but as far as I know, that just means it's a more acidic shampoo which is a good thing.

Anyway, below is her review for Aloe Rid and Assure...

Nexxus Aloe Rid Shampoo

Nexxus Assure Replenishing Nutrient Shampoo

Perhaps you could buy both and use them complementarily.

Thanks. I'm going to see if Aveda has anything for swimming since I know their products work well on my hair and I can but it at my usual salon. But of course if the Nexxus is cheaper I'll be more inclined to try that.

I may juct try them both (eventually).

Which protective style do you guys think would be less stressful and encourage growth; a full sewn wet-n-wear weave or individual med. size braids(like Crown&Glory technique)?

I'm partial to individual braids, only coz I can maintain them better. I can redo them one at a time as they get messy; also I find it easier to moisturize and monitor the condition of my hair when it isn't hidden under a hair piece. But that's just me.

Perhaps you should do a forum search on weaves and braids and see the pros and cons of both before you decide on which to do. But whichever you choose, make sure whoever does your braids/cornrows knows how to do them without pulling hair too tight.
