So...I decided to convert myself to the almighty "roller set" everybody here loves; and it was a disaster!:nono:

My hair came out so thick and greasy feeling because I used some castor oil to "seal" the ends. And then when I combed it out a bit, it turned into a big fluff!!! I chalk this up (a little bit, anyway) to the fact that I really need a touch-up.

That's not even the worst part, the worst part is, that once I went through all that, over an inch of my hair to maybe three inches felt like dead hair. I was like, ":covereyesOH NO!!! I can't have all these dead ends!!!" I just had my hair trimmed a month ago, it can't be ALL dead. I felt like crying, and then chopping!

WHAT DID I DO WRONG?!!

Oh and FYI, here's what I did: I washed, oil-rinsed, conditioned, and put in Tea-tree leave-in, I used a little castor oild hair dressing on the ends, and wrapped my hair, using metal clips to secure. Do you see any problem with this? Please let me know, I'm trying to switch to a no-heat regimen!

Between the castor oil and your leave-in you may have used too much that's why your hair came out greasy. I can't use oils or anything before roller setting or I'll get heavy hair. Once I used some kind of pomade on each section before rolling it and man it was a disaster. Now I just use a small amound of leave-in and spray each section with setting lotion. I get light bouncy curls each time. I suggest trying it like that if you want a light, bouncy, silky set. HTH

Thank you...my sister, who's a brand new hairdresser, told me the same thing! I have a free day, so I'm going to try again.

I agree about the castor oil. Not to mention, there was probably some residual oil in your hair from the oil rinse itself.

The least amount of product works best for me as well.

ITA. The castor oil may be the culprit. If you need an oil, you may want to try a very light coating of coconut oil instead.

Also, was your hair absolutely sopping wet when you used the rollers? If it was not, this may also be the culprit, especially if you have porous hair. I have naturally porous hair, so I have to saturate/drench each section of hair--before placing it on the roller--with a mixture of water and setting lotion (very diluted).

And that setting lotion is truly a lifesaver (I use Lottabody, myself.):yep:

awee sorry. good job for trying. so try try again.
i concur- don't use anything in it. and it was puffy b/c you didnt have the right tension on the hair when you rolled. it should be tight but not hurt or pull the roots. just straight.
and

ALL hair is dead. so don't worry. if it were alive it would hurt to style it w/those irons people use!!

Hey people's! I took all ya'lls suggestions and had a bouncy, beautiful rollerset! I pin curled it last night and I'm about to take it out, and I will post some pictures!!! Thanks for all your help... I'll be on my way to BSL in no time!
