So I finally got coconut milk, now what?

I know i'm supposed to mix 1 cup with 2 tbl. of lime juice but do i put it on dry hair? or after i shampoo?

I have also just put plain coconut milk on my dry hair and left it on for an hour or two before shampooing. My hair turned out soft.
