I put up a post yesterday about questions I should ask about getting my hair braided and this is what she said

How much is it for no-knot cornrows?
For straight back it is $35. For 2 layers it is $45

Does the cost include the wash?
Yes, the wash and the blow dry
Is the hair provided or do I need to bring my own?
No, hair is not provided

What kind of hair should I buy?
She said we could go to the shop together since I dont know what kind to use since it is my first time. It will cost more for human hair.

I am transitioning so I still have relaxed hair, is that ok?

Yes thats fine, I do natural hair

How will the braids be finished?
If the hair is curled at the end I will probably just put mousse on it, if the ends are straight I will just cut and burn it

So does this sound about right to you? Please let me know
Also Im pretty sure I will be bringing my own heat protectant just in case they dont have any there.:yep:

I paid about that with NO wash at a home made salon.
I don't know what 2 layers mean and nothing was done at the end of the hair to hold it. I also don't allow them to blow dry my hair so I go the braider with air dried plaits.

So long as they don't cut, glue or burn YOUR hair u should be all set.

Sounds good...I've payed 60/75 for one layer cornrows with a design and my hair not washed first

For cornrows human hair is not really needed IMO

Make sure she's not rough with the blowdryer, I usually dry my hair at home too, if its airdryed and thick, they might start ripping throught it with a comb, if you put product on it, they might say it too greasy/moist and re-wash, if you dont put anything on it, they might put grease or whatever they have on it.

Alot of times they like to use grease also, and a jam type of gel on your edges, and use a small tooth comb to comb through your hair during the process...so make sure your okay with that or if theirs anything different you want to bring/use.

They usually charge more for curled ends, to curl them sometimes they dip the hair in hot water, then dry and use products..and their like spiral curls or something, when i got them done i just had them to leave the ends straight, it was like a $15/20 extra charge and i didnt like it to much

Okay, now I've braided other people's hair before and myself for over 8 years. I've been natural and relaxed and transition before.

Human hair would be better for braids b/c synthetic hair is more drying to NATURAL hair especially when transitioning and dealing with 2 texture and demacration line.

As far as the braids being finished if you are using curly hair she would still need end it somehow (i.e. glueing the hair after braiding it at least an inch to an 1.5" past your REAL hair) and if it straight hair she can either burn the ends or do the same thing as the curly hair by using glue or putting curly rods on the ends of the hair and dipping in hot water (this also works on synthetic hair)

Definately bring a heat protectant and I would consider get a deep condition done as well before the braids. And that she doesn't pull your hair while braiding (last thing you want is breakage from rough handling of your hair during transition period)

I don't know anything about this.
but i'm here to say that you best post some pix when you get your braids in!!!:grin:

While synthetic hair can be more drying for braids - I'm not sure it's worth it to invest in human hair since you'll have to get them redone in 2-3 wks anyway, and the hair may not be re-useable. Just IMO.

If you've never been to her before, ánd you're comfortable blowdrying your own hair, I'd say wash, condition, blow dry, and detangle at home. Most stylists are super rough with that comb attachment. Just b/c your NG is natural, doesn't mean it can be tugged on, AND it's going to stress your relaxed ends and demarcation line.

I'm getting my first set of rows next week - as far as I can tell - layers are the number of layers of individuals you have in the back. If you do rows with just 1 row of braids hanging down, that's single layer - 2 layers means you have 2 rows of braids at the back. It all depends on what kind of look you want.

I don't know if you have time to order or search around your city, but E-ON and the Nafy collection synthetic braid hair are supposed to be extra gentle on your natural hair. Also for tips on removing chemical residue on the extension hair you can visit Ms. Robin's site growafrohairlong.

ooh thanx for the advice, i need all i can get:yep:

The price is good but I can't get with the burning ends. Even if it's not your hair that's being burned fire and hair just don't mix for me.:nono:

Sounds like they're gonna be pretty!:yep:

I get braids all the time and never at that price.... AND that price includes a wash. That is excellent!

Yes, I agree with the other poster(s) who said for this type of style it would be better to not use human hair. Although you certainly can use human hair *I * think it would be to costly for this style seeing as though cornrows don't usually last as long.

I love the knot less cornrows. We call them "Feed In" cornrows down here. I plan on getting some maybe in Oct.

I always use Dana Kali Kanekalon hair for all types of braids.

Don't forget to take pics:grin:

sounds good if not better to me. I personnaly dont like my ends burned I dont like the look and I always have this thought that the flame is catching my hair. If its synthetic or yaky hair it can be dipped in hot water and hold. For human hair i always get rubberbands on the ends you may think it sounds tacky, but you can also have her glue the very end of each braid HTH

If she uses wet and wavy bulk hair then she just needs to put mousse on it and hair curls up and it won't unravel........ I think that is what the stylist is talking about.

I use to get 2 or 3 rows done before. I can't remember for sure. It resembled Beyonce's hairstyle from years ago and I would keep them in for 2 months. I would get the front row rebraided but the back didn't have to get done because the front row pretty much covered it up. I have been thinking about getting them done again.

My stylist charged $60 at least 4 years ago with no wash and I had to get my own hair.

That's really cheap. The same cornrows probably run between 80 and 100 here depending on how small. Those feeding ones cost more than the regular oness. And that's without a wash and blowdry.

I also agree that you should go with the synthetic kanekalon hair. I wouldn't use human hair for cornrows. It is the regular cheapy synthetic hair that will dry your hair out not the kanekalon synthetic.

Will the kanekalon cause a chemical reaction like it does to some if you dont put a treatment on it?
