Ladies, I went to the salon last Thursday and got what the stylist called a "mini-Keratin" it wasn't a full keratin treatment. It only cost me $100 when the full treatment costs $350. He stressed to me that the treatment I got is different from the BKT and that mine was primarily considered a conditioning treatment.

He also told me that I needed to use a SLS-free shampoo. But he only told me that AFTER I asked. Thank goodness I knew this from being on the haircare boards for so long or he would have never thought to mention it to me. He didn't mention anything about the conditioner.

My question is, do I also have to use SLS/sulfate-free conditioner or does it not matter? My favorite deep conditioners have sulfates in it I'm pretty sure.

Last question: if I were to use any product with SLS in it, about how long would the Keratin treatment take to wear off?

I don't know the answer, but I'm assuming only sulfate free.

By the way, would you described in more detail the mini treatment...what did he do?

Sure.

A girl clarified my hair with a clarifying shampoo then the stylist put some of the Global Keratin product on my hair. I sat under the dryer with a plastic cap for 45 minutes then she took me to the back and blowdried my hair on cool. Put me back under the dryer for 30 minutes (she said to add moisture to my hair--I don't believe that part though. I think he stylist was overbooked and was trying to assuage some of his clients by making them feel as though they were being serviced.) Then the stylist came. He blowdried my hair with a professional blowdryer. During this time, there were NO fumes at all. The heat from the blowdryer wasn't that hot to me either. Lastly he flat ironed my hair with about 2 passes on each strand.

My hair turned out with a lot of body and shine.

I have the Organix sulfate Free shampoo. I thought sulfates were surfactants/detergents and only in shampoo. Why would they be in conditioner? Unless BTMS is considered a "sulfate"

Heres some
Do not despair! First stop for you should be an Organic Store or Health Food Store in your neighborhood. Other chains like Whole Foods, Trader Joes — can also carry what you seek. .
There are many many sulfate free shampoos out there that would be great. While I’m not allergic I follow the CG routine that advocates against Sulfates — Giovanni Direct, Avalon Organics, J/a/s/o/n are some of the easiest to find. Some others are:
ABBA-’True Curls’ 10oz : $11.25
ALFA PARF-’Splendore-Hydrate’ 9oz:$15.49
ALTERNA – ‘Hemp Seed & Cavier’10oz:$16.99
BROCATO – ‘Splash’ 10oz:$9.45
DEVA -’Curl Low Poo’ 12oz:$13.50
ENJOY- all Sulfate-Free 10oz:$12.99
J BEVERLY HILLS – ‘Fragile-Colour-Safe’ : 12 oz : $13.05
JONATHAN – ‘Moisture’ 8.4oz : $20.00
KENRA – ‘Platinum’ 10oz : $14.40
L’ANZA -’Healing Colour Care’ 8oz:$16.50
MASTEY- ‘Enove Creme Shampoo’ 8oz:$9.90

Avoid the sulfates....It washes it right out....I used the Coco's Keratin, full strength....And it lasted over 9 mos....I had expected it to last only 6...When I took my box braids (w/extension) out, and mistakenly grabbed my Creme of Nature (has SLS), my hair felt totally different! I didn't worry because I was over 9 mos past the BKT so I felt I got way more than my $$ worth...Plus I am active, and by summer (I'd gotten it last Sept-2010) I was swimming at the beach, pools, etc...so I didn't worry. I am getting my next BKT in Sept! Can't wait!

Either way...use SLS-free products whenever you have the keratin treatment....

I use Giovanni 50:50 Clarifying and Moisturizing Shampoo (its SLS-free)... None of the conditioners I use have sulfates...
