I'm in search of the best methods & products for slicking down natural hair; it seems as if the longer my hair grows the more it behaves however it wants to. :giggle:

Is getting a sleek style that lasts more dependent on technique or an arsenal of awesome products? Do you slick down wet hair tie it down, then air dry or go under the dryer? Do you slick you hair down while dry?

Share your tips, methods that work & methods that don't.

TIA!

I don't like sleeked down hair unless the hair texture is silky, smooth, straight...because it looks to me like someone applied slime and reminds me of those hairstyles of the 80's that were stiff and hard and looked like Jermaine's hair.

When I do my pulled back puff, I just moisturize my hair with whatever moisturizer I was using eg S Curl and then comb it in a backward direction. Next I put one of those large elastics around my neck like one does a necklace then lift it up to my hairline and using my hands and the band, flatten the hair as I push it back...tightening the twist of the band at my nape as I slide it back, then looping it over to double up the band. I do not use a scarf or gel after that to flatten any more but just wear my hair all day like that:

I actually love the little fuzz (halo) you see when you look over the flat part against light. Doesn't bother me one bit!

It works better for me on wet hair. Slicked back with a tight pantyhose headband, and tie it down with a scarf. When I do it like that, i don't need globs of gel, jam, or grease. A little oil will do just fine.

I read in another thread about murrays superior. I tried it, but it's like glue in my hair. It does the job though.

I'm not natural yet but I'm 10 months post. I use gel (aloe vera and just found eco styler). It works best for me when my hair is wet. At first I didn't use that much (about a dime size) and it didn't work that well, now that I add more, about a dollop, it works much better and doesn't dry stiff. HTH.
