Ok I just left my girlfriend's home and a very comical discussion. She left corporate America making a large salary, great bonuses and professional title to work for herself to become an independent hair stylist. I admire her for pursuing her real dreams and true talents.

Anywho - today she told me she did not realize how nasty women were until she began doing hair. She said she can tell if a woman had sex, smoked, worked out, sweated or whatever just by washing her hair because the hair will give off a foul odor. She said most women do not even realize their hair smells that bad but it does. Here are some tips she gave and I thought I would share:

1. Wash your hair once a week or don't go no MORE than 2 weeks without washing it. The hair goes where your face goes and you would not imagine not washing your face for that length of time.

2. Stop using conditioner as shampoo. It isn't shampoo, will cause buildup in your hair over time and if it has protein in it, will harden it to the point it snaps.

3. Your hair gives off a foul odor if it hasn't been washed in a while - stop being lazy, use that shampoo, lather up at least twice and use a deep conditioner with a plastic cap and let it sit so it can penetrate.

4. Whether natural or relaxed, trim your ends every 6 to 8 weeks. Keep those ends healthy so split ends don't run rampant in your head of hair.

5. If possible, rest from the relaxers. All those chemicals as you get older do not bode well especially if you begin to take blood pressure or thyroid medicatioin which thins your hair.

That's it for now.....but she could not stress enuff, wash your hair like you would wash your behind! Stop being lazy ladies...your hair is funky! Can you say skunk hair?

Skunk hair, huh? Too funny!

ETA: Tell your friend I sorta follow her rules, so she's got one follower of her rules here.

my friend had skunk hair yesterday and she sat next to me during my organic chemistry exam...she was seriously interfering with my concentration...i still love her though!:look:

yeah she calls skunk hair that funky hair that stinks. she says it has a bunch of build up from so-called conditioner washing, products and dandruff and it is caked up in there. She typically has to do like 4 washes to get it all out. She says us women need to do better.

:look: i would think most women on this forum shampoo and condition their hair on a weekly if not daily basis. and im not trimming perfectly good hair for no reason so your friend can take a walk with that one

Even back when I had no idea how to care for my hair, clean hair was a given. I never walked around with dirty hair. I don't understand some folks.

I don't understand the trim 6-8 weeks thing, you're only trimming away all your new growth. That's only necessary for women with relaxers who use too much heat IMO. A lot of women stay NL for years behind that advice.

I'm giving rule #2 and #4 the side-eye

there are waaaaaaay too many healthy, gorgeous heads on here that adamantly reject those two rules and thrive like mad.

i think this just goes to show that every head is different.

one person's recipe for "skunk" is another person's "just fine"

Don't think KNOW! She does hair e'erday and not saying the women she works on are on this forum, but she says they definitely need to check how often they shampoo their hair because their heads are funky! She said - how can the men in their lives sleep with that?

She was perplexed. She also had a client today who has 1/2 natural and relaxed ends and she told her - honey I need to trim these ends. The young girl started crying and my friend informed her - look your hair is about to snap off where the natural hair and relaxed hair meet - trimming is a way to mitigate damage from the 2 textures. Slowly and steadily trim off the ends and you will be natural in no time.

She also said - stop having damaged 2 inch hair bringing in a picture to get a hairstyle like Halle Berry (short cut). NOT if your hair is damaged! She has to nurse it back to health first.

LOL funky and smelly is funky and smelly no matter how you slice it.

A trim is cleaning up the ends that are beginning to split before it splits up the shaft and breaks off the entire strand. A trim does not mean 3 inches all of the time. At some point it becomes a cut. A trim is 1 inch or less.

Women remain NL because they get trims yet use a lot of heat which continues to break off their hair.

Oh I forgot, she was a proponent for using leave-ins for those products labeled as leave-ins. Don't use deep conditioners as leave-ins. They were not made for that.

I could never get with the whole using conditioner instead of shampoo thing either:nono:

I agree with most of her advice except #4

when i was relaxed i used to wash my hair like once a month....and keep putting product on/flat-ironing dirty hair and wrapping it the whole time like it was nothing...so my hair was probably smelling a lil tart too but i dismissed it as "hair" smell lol...but now that i cowash my hair pretty much every day or every other day and shampoo once a week, "hair" smell bothers me...so while most women on this forum probably dont have funky hair, alot of women IRL do...oh and i dont agree w/ 2 & 4 either...just because a "stylist" said something doesnt make it law.

I used to notice how sour my hair used to smell when I only washed it every two weeks (or so). So I can only imagine the smells that the person at the bowl gets.

I don't necessarily disagree with her points as I have heard them from any variety of hairdressers (and or LHCF) over the years.

I had 2 good stylist in my life and they only trimmed when necessary. And my hair grew! When I started taking care of my own hair and started trimming more often for no good reason, it's been stuck in APL-ville for over a year! :nono:

LOL funky and smelly is funky and smelly no matter how you slice it.

not obeying rules #2 and #4 don't automatically equal funky and smelly for everyone....and it would be naive to think so.

i co-washed for months and my hair was never funky or smelly.

i protected my ends and didn't trim for 6 months - and again - my hair was never funky or smelly.

and there are plenty of folks here who have had the same experience.

"different strokes work for different folks" that's also true any way you slice it.

.

But if the average rate of growth is .5 inches a month, trimming even .5 an inch would be a problem every 6-8 weeks, especially for those whose hair grows slower than the average. I guess I can't imagine why one's hair would be prone to splitting and breaking constantly if it's healthy and you're not using much heat.

I've only trimmed once every 6 months as a natural and it's the single strand knots that were a menace, never split ends. ..those can't be helped because of my curl pattern though. My hair has never been healthier.

Agree. Cowashing works for me and I don't see the need to trim perfectly good hair.

trim an 1" every 6x8 weeks, I grow .4" a month... :/ I'll be stagnate in my hair journey.

I also am half relaxed and half natural(well more like 40/60) I don't understand how trimming will mitigate damage.
I really don't get this, I can't say i know tons about hair but if the hair was going to break wouldn't it because of lack of/too much moisture/protein? I really don't see why she needed to trim. Poor girl i'd have been sad too :(

Some folks think dirty hair grows quicker.

:yep: Yes, they do. Growing up, I had a few friends whose mother's subscribed to that. They didn't wash their hair for several weeks. One that I'm thinking of right now had a jherri curl and that mess STANK!! :nono: Her mother would actually criticize my mother and others for washing our hair weekly.
My friend had dandruff/buildup/crud so bad on her scalp it looked like she got hit with a bag of dirty flour. :ohwell:

ETA - There are many ladies on here that don't regularly shampoo and have no issues. Its all about knowing your own hair and doing what works for you. I got my hair cut last May and did a tiny snip of ends several weeks ago and my ends are doing great! :yep: I only trimmed because my hair is at the length where it can be annoying.

Soror ~ No offense your friend sounds like a typical stylist. Some of her advice is cool. However, how many women's hair has she done that cowash consistently?? The chicks whose hair she does probably don't wash with shampoo or conditioner often which is why their hair stinks. I still give the side eye to the trim every 6-8 weeks. If stylist knew how to only trim 1/3, 1/4, or 1/5 of an inches versus INCHES then I could hear what she is saying.

I'm new here but I'm not new to stylists believing their word is gospel. "rule" #2 and #4 is a load of...well u get where I'm going. Now no offense to OP or your friend the stylist but I'm going to need to see your personal progress from being her client that follows her every hair "rule". Make us non-believers become a believer with your before and after testimonial. By the way and still no offense but I joined the long hair care forum to learn how to retain my hair growth. Does your friend's "rules" help in that area?

Well I realized how nasty some women were just by attending college and living in the dorm and by visiting public restrooms.

Anyhoo, I cowash four times a week and I don't trim according to a particular time frame. I listen to my hair and trim on an as needed basis. I also only lather once when shampooing. Shampooing more than once is unnecessary for me unless I'm using neutralizing shampoo after a relaxer. Or if I'm clarifying then I follow up with a moisturizing shampoo.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with scissor happy stylists that hate my cowashing routine. I'm my own stylist so it's a win win situation for me.

Differences make the world go round. The world would be so boring if we all thought the same or had the same amount of knowledge.

i understand the not washing often. i am an esthetician and i can smell everything too.(hair and skin) oh it really gets interesting in the treatment room when i turn the steamer on, or massage the skin. all of those toxins come out. i had one client, who was a smoker. when i started to give her a steam treatment, she had the room smelling like i lit up a square!. she wouldn't drink any water either. she was there all day getting different spa services, and wouldn't drink a cup of water to save her life.
