Hi Ladies,

I am new to the LHCF and don't have any pictures up yet, but I'm gonna tell you about my problem and ask for any and all help!! My hair is mid-neck length (if that). One side of my hair grows faster and easier than the other side. Also, my stylist told me that my edges aren't growing. They aren't thinning or anything, just not growing with the rest of my hair (if that makes any sense). It seems like my hair has been at this constant length for the past 2 years or so. I have mostly type 4B hair. It is a sandy color of red/brown.

Here is my routine. I was my hair twice a week with Ashte shampoo and condition with Dove conditioner. This probably isn't the best products to be using on black hair, but like I said, I'm a beginner. I don't take any multivitamins and I don't deep condition because I don't have a sit-under hair dryer at home. Occasionally, however, I will put conditioner on my hair and leave it in all day and that seems to make my hair softer and more manageable.

I currently get a relaxer about every 6 weeks, which is probably too soon. I'm not sure what textalizing is either, so if someone could explain that I'd appreciate it!!

HELP!!

I use Dove Shampoo and Conditioner which I love. Some poeple on here have beautiful hair and swear by it. They do have AA in the Dove commericals. My hair stylist said I have good healthy hair she didn't believe me when I told her I was using Dove. The manufactor says that Dove is DDTA after they brought out the previous company. So keep using it if it is working. What is the shampoo your using I've never heard of that? Why not use the Dove S&C together?

Do you clarify?
What is your night time routine?
What is your morning routine?
Do you experience breakage or shedding on the side?
What hair type do you have?

I am sure you will get more questions but here are some to thing about.
I would receommend that you get a hooded dry.

Welcome to the LHCF!

Thanks for the comment! I don't use clarifying shampoo...honestly, I'm not really sure how and when I should use it. Any suggestions? I do use the Dove shampoo, but I'm currently out and I started using something that a friend of mine gave me called Ashte'. I'm going to get more Dove before I shampoo again though.

My nightly routine is as follows: I smooth on some Chi silk serum and wrap my hair and tie it up with a silk scarf. Most times it stays on the entire night, but sometimes it ends up coming off. In the morning, I unwrap my hair with a paddle brush and then comb it to a style. I do have some minor breakage, but I don't think its anything unhealthy.

I'm looking for something to keep my hair moisturized without weighing it down. I have a mix of type 4A and 4B hair (mostly 4B). Thanks again.

Any suggestions?

I use clarify ( again cheap White Rain I think) maybe once a month when I see that my hair isn't socking up the oils or moisturizer.

What relaxer do you use?

I found that the Boners Brothers (white and pink) moisturizer works good for my hair.

Do you use oil to seal moisture?

Also recommend a prepoo - I used cheap VO5 conditier with oil. There are a lot of oil options on the board. I might use Khoret Oil from carol's daughter, palm kernel oil, or hot six oil.

How often do you wash?

I don't clarify, but I will start...(once a month?). Also, I'm not sure what type of relaxer my stylist uses (I think it's Affirm)...I'll find out at my appointment on Thursday.

Where can I find Boner Brothers moisturizer? Is it heavy? I don't use oil because it weighs my hair down (however, now that I think about it, when I did use oil, my hair was somewhat healthier, but also heavier).

I do pre-poo...right now with Nexxus Humectress. I am getting ready to try this pre-poo made by philosophy that Tia Williams talked about on her blog (www.shakeyourbeauty.com). I wash my hair twice a week and usually blow dry it and flat iron it with a Chi ceramic iron. If I don't blow dry it, it's usually in a ponytail until the next time I wash it. I can't do a loose pony because my edges aren't long enough. I try to avoid the pony, but sometimes I can't.

Thanks for all your help...what's next?

:welcome: there's loads of information on here.
First thing first most here find that direct heat (blowdryer, flat iron, curling tongs etc) affects their hair adversely so they rollerset or use heat sparingly with a heat protectant. That may be part of your problem. Also most shampoos contain certain sulphates which can be drying to the hair so either cut down usage to once a week or dilute heavily alternating the shampoo wash with a co-wash (washing with just conditioner). There are loads of threads on growing edges, including using sulphur based products on your hairline(sulphur 8, MTG, Boundless Tresses etc), I'm sure u'll pick up a lot more Good luck! Start with reading (studying really:yep:) the stickie for newbies:grin:

justnotsure, welcome...and we have much work to do with you, young grasshopper! lol Not criticizing (because I'm still a work-in-progress myself), but I think your regimen could use some improvement. Start deep conditioning, stretch out those relaxers, make sure you're balancing moisture & protein, and you can find many other tips, products, etc. by using the search button. Also, if you see someone's hair that you like don't be afraid to send them a private message and let them know and ask them more specific questions about their regimen and products (most are flattered and take it as a compliment). Anyway, welcome again.

welcome to the board. have you looked at the newbie sticky. it's in the sticky thread at the top of the page. also check out sistaslick's articles. she has lots of information for newbies. www.fotki.com/sistaslick
