So i have been having trouble with finding someone in Jacksonville that is willing to braid/style/treat natural hair. Its been almost a month long struggle to find somone, until i met some girls who live on my college campus who had dreds and natural hair. I let them braid it two weeks ago for $15. I didn't mind the price but i haven't had a job yet. So, in between i was using a straightener and rollersetting... only it as becoming too much manipulation. My hair started to suffer heat damage so i knew it needed protein for the next couple of weeks. My roommate said she could braid, so i let her. Believe me, she did an excellent job... but she ripped through my hair with a fine-tooth comb. I should have stopped her when i saw how much was coming out, but, i didn't. Now, i started noticing that the breakage was getting out of control, between the twistie rollers and the former heat damage. So, i decided to pre-poo with CPR, amla oil and ORS Replenshing pak for about 3 hrs . ( i didn't laundry while it sat on my head). This worked last time with detangling and breakage. Afterward, was washed, i noticed my ends were super thin (very uncommon for me). Then i DC with Motions CPR and a drop of cholesterol for about 20 mins. This worked on the breakage... but it was already too late. I went from being nape length with thick ends, to maybe.. chin-length. I'm so mad, but i have no one to blame but myself. I should have stopped her... why didn't i stop her??? I am going to get a relaxer with Wishin4Bsl tommorrow and let transitioning go until i graduate and get out of JAX. People here only relax and the nearest natural salon is over an hour away.:cry:

I'm so sorry about your experience.

I've lived in the Jax area for about 7 years (I'm originally from Connecticut). Its hard to find a GOOD stylist in general around here. Interesting huh?

I am really sorry to hear this but I don't understand how relaxing is going to help you in your transition?

Its not. I'm done with transitiong until i get out of JAX.:( It was soooo purty too... i was starting to get 3b/C curls at top and beautiful 4A/B coils in the back.

Why don't you just do your hair yourself since there's no natural salon nearby? There's plenty of info here that could help you. I haven't been to a natural salon for a hairstyle at all. I bced back in September.

ITA- I use to think I couldn't manage it on my own but after getting a ton of info on here and sometimes on nappturality-I was able to. But overall I got a TON of info on here. Don't give up on it just yet.;)

I can't self-braid, and i can't get my twist to stay (relaxed ends)thats the problem. Rollersetting has been too rough. I had length up top to do a bun, but the nape was mini-chopped so it shorter. My mom and i have been doing it together and i was soooo close to SL and my BC. I dunno... i throw in the towel. At this point, i am really contemplating shaving my head.

Well, you have to do what's best for yourself.

But certainly, you can handle your transitioning hair if you want to continue to transition, or depending on how much relaxed hair you have left, just finish the relaxed hair off.

One of the main reasons a significant percentage of women go natural is to be able to maintain their own hair. I'm totally style challenged, but can still bun, braid, twist, and puff my own hair.

Best of luck though. It sounds like your hair is a bit damaged though from the heat treatment, and you might want to hold off on the relaxer until you build up the strands a bit.

There are some natural salons in JAX but they aren't cheap. I know of one off of Merrill Rd and one off of Arlington Rd. $15 for braids is a good deal though. I agree with everyone else who said "do it yourself." What happens if you move somewhere that does not have that many ethnic salons period? Then what????

OW! That statement made my head hurt...:look: I really don't know... im just so used to my stylist doing it or my mom helping me with it. Its finding protective styles for short transitioning hair. Oy Vie. I am really swaying on shaving it.

Okay, before you give up on transitioning go to www.nappturality.com first. It should help a lot!

I know i do this all the time....but i am thinking about going to the salon (the W4bSL goes to). I am thinking about letting a pro get at it and diagnose me. If she says its badly damaged and needs a trim--> BC it. If its salvagable and not as short as i think, i will let her treat it and rollerset it. When i am at home... i'll use steam rollers? Is that a good plan of action, ladies? Can i steam roll it everyday and still have it grow? Or am i compiling damage?

I can't really braid all that good either. That's why I usually wash and go or wear my phony pony when I'm not in wigs or weaves. Have you thought about bunning or getting a rod set or straw set? Or what about a braid out or a twist out? I think it would be easier to make your relaxed hair look like the new growth than to straighten the new growth and potentially damage it in the process.

Why don't you just do the BC? I think thats the best way to get use to your natural hair. I did it? I was scared and not to excited about the new look but I gradually started to love it. I only had short, short hair like that for about three months. Its summer time it will grow rapidly and you can get a lot advice on here how to manage but with the BC it very easy to manage on your own. Just invest in good leave in and moisturizers and go thats about it. You will be surprised how freeing it is. As for your last question I would try to stay away from heat for a while.
