Shake N' Break

Is it normal to have breakage when shaking you hair out, i.e. broken strands falling on the floor?

Thanks for replying, guys!

This is what I was afraid of....

Even finger-combing my hair this a.m. resulted in quite a bit of broken hair in the sink.

Fortunately, I believe I figured out the problem: The past couple of weeks, I have been using Pureology Superstraight shampoo and conditioner, because I LOVE how it makes my new growth more manageable. I've also been using Profetiv Mega Growth anti-breakage strengthner, and yesterday, I used the Aphogee 2 minute hair reconstructer, and all of these (including the Pureology shampoo) have protein. I must have protein-overload in my hair.

So it's back to concentrating on moisturizing with non-protein products. I'm beginning to think that my hair doesn't like protein, because I didn't think this was too much protein. :perplexed

I have posted here before about my problems with protein. I cowash everyday and I had started using products with protein in them. I didn't get breakage but my hair got SUPER dry and felt awful. I changed to products with no or VERY little protein and my hair got better very fast. I now only use protein periodically when I deep condition. It works much better for me.

The only way to know is to give up protein for a bit and see how it goes. It may or may not be the problem for you. Perhaps it's just a matter of finding the right balance between protein and moisture.

I hope you find the solution!

You should try implementing profectiv long and healthy into your routine. It is great for when your hair needs pure moisture. Put a bunch on at night and your hair will absorb it all and be super moisturized by morning. It is also great for ends. :)

Cichelle- Thank you very much! :) I did consider that maybe it wasn't the protein, maybe it was the Pureology Shampoo and conditioner, since I didn't have this problem until I started using them, so there is a possibility that protein might not be my problem.

goldensensation- I had made another thread asking about keeping new growth moisturized, and I might have to look for something else that will work well. Thanks for the recommendation :) , I think I'll go to Sally's and get a bottle, it sounds like it's worth trying.

I am currently experiencing the same problem. I thought that maybe it was because I increased the amount of heat that I have been using but after reading the previous post I think it just may be my protein intensive products. I'll switch to moisture instensive to see if it helps. Keep us updated on your progress.

Thanks, Junebug.

Have you read Sistaslick's Hairbreakage 101 Thread? It's at the top of the page, it's a sticky. She provides some excellent information on types of hair breakage and how to prevent it.

I think what you're doing with increasing moisture for your hair will definitely help. Keep us posted as well.

BTW, welcome to the boards! :)

Thanks Denium and Leather

I just read the haircare 101 thread that you referred me to. The info was helpful. I think I now know what to do. I pray it does the trick.

I saw an ingredients list for this and saw that it has hydrolyzed silk. Isn't this protein? This ingredient is higher up on the list.

I just checked my bottle, and yep, hydrolyzed silk is listed as an ingredient. However, I promise you, this stuff is SUPER moisturizing. I think that the silk is a weak protein and most moisturizers need, at least, a weak protein in order to work well. I've been using this stuff for 2+ years and it has never made my hair, my mother's hair or my sister's hair dry or brittle; only super soft and supple (and I use a leave-in with protein everyday). I understand your apprehension in purchasing it, but I only recommend products that I truly believe will work. I believe that the long and healthy will make your hair softer.:)

I endorse their stuff so much, profectiv should pay me. :look:

  Maybe they should put you on the cover....your hair is certainly pretty and healthy enough. :)

Thanks for the clarification. I definitely was worried about the protein content. I think I will go ahead and buy bottle, then. Can you believe I called 3 different Sally's and went to 3 different stores and one of them carried this? I'll just go back to eBay, they did have it.

Thanks for the compliment!

Perhaps you could give your local drugstore a try (CVS, RITE AID, etc). They dont have a big supply, but they usually have a tiny bit in stock. If you do decide to get it, let me know if you like it.

Oh, and speaking of Sally's... the only one in my area is closed. I guess the privately owned BSS proved to be too much competition. I loved the ION heat protectant, but I've switched to NeXxus'... just in time, I suppose. ;)

You're welcome! :)

I too, thought Rite Aid or Sav-On's would have Profectiv, and I did go to those stores yesterday, but surprisingly, they didn't carry any Profectiv products. Maybe I'll try Walgreens.

How funny the Sally's closed because of a privately owned BSS store, you'd think it would be the other way around!

Now you have me wanting to buy this stuff, lol. I noticed that Wal-Mart carries it now and it looked really good. I've been eying it for awhile. It smells great too.
