How do you guys do it? Do you use gloves or brushes? Brushes seems like it would be easier, less chance of dropping that stuff on other sections of hair. Also, how do you prevent overlapping? I haven't given myself one since Sept when I joined, but prior to really taking care of my hair I used to just slap it all over not really caring

I used to slap it all over too girl:lol: ...my hair was a hot mess back then.

This is what I do now.

I section my hair in four big sections. Do a center part and then part ear-to-ear. I rub vaseline all around my forehead, nape, ears and in the sections. I rub a mixture of Motions Silk Protein Conditioner and Olive Oil on all of the previously relaxed hair and pin each section with clips. This part is vital in preventing overprocessing.

I use Mizani Reg. Lye and mix with abt. 2 teaspoons of EVOO and Motions conditioner mix so that it slows the processing time so I dont end up doing a sloppy, rush job. I put a plastic cap on the top portion of my head covering the two front sections that I parted previously. I start applying the relaxer ONLY ON THE NEWGROWTH. I use my fingers b/c they're really small:lol: , but you can use the back of a comb or a relaxer/coloring brush that they sell at Sally's. Make sure to apply the relaxer METHODICALLY as in part each section into abt 3 sections and get up in there. Once Im done processing i rinse out the back of my head in the shower. Since I have a shower cap in the front of my head that hair wont get wet. Then I apply the relaxer to the front of my head after i wash out the back.

I recently relaxed my hair and did something similar to the previos poster. I parted my hair in 4 sections (down the middle and then from ear to ear). I started relaxing the front first (very top of my head, in front of the ear to ear part) and worked my way toward my hairline. I then began on the back part of my hair (starting at the top behind the ear to ear part) and worked my way down to the nape). By the time I was done the front part had processed the appropriate amount of time so I rinsed the relaxer out of the front only (I did this at the sink). I clipped the rinse part up and let the back continue processing and then went back to the sink and rinsed my entire head. I applied the post relaxer perm treatment for 10 mins, rinsed, and then shampoo'd with neutralizer 3 times.

If you choose to do it this way, here is a tip. Put a shower cap over the back half of your hair and put a skinny head band over it to hold it in place and it will help you to prevent rinsing past the earline part. The headband is really a good thing because it holds the bag in place and you can feel it with your hands as you are rinsing so there are no mistakes. This was my best self relaxer ever. In the past I over processed or underprocessed because I didn't do it this way. I used to relax my whole head at once.
Good luck!

Thanks for these great tips especially the one with the headband Cayenne! I am going to use these techniques when I texlax in the fall.

Thanks! I only need to relax the front of my head because the half down part is like this fabulous white girl texture!! While the front is like ridiculously coarse and unmanageable!! Putting oil on the previously relaxed hair sounds like a great idea! Thanks! :)
