Okay. Here's my dillema. I love wearing buns and puffs except my waves look like a rough waters. There are so many waves and they are everywhere. NOT CUTE AT ALL!!

I'm looking for Smooth Waters...LOL Well in other words, I want my waves to be smooth and consistent. Like the picture below. (Picture courtesy of Ms_CoCo37). I see a lot of naturals with this but for some reason my hair just won't smooth out.

 @ the title! That's cute!

How do you do your buns? I didn't do this in my siggy pic :look: but for my puffs I spray my edges with water, add product (leave in w/castor oil or gel), smooth lightly with a brush, then I tie it down with a scarf for about 10-15 minutes while I get other things done or finish getting ready. When I take the scarf down, voila. :yep:

Hopefully some of the other ladies will chime in. :yep:

I had this issue too. This is how i get a smooth and synchronized wave.

a) make sure hair is completley detangled

b) apply heavy product. i find a creamy conditioner with aloe high in the ingriedients works better than a gel. I recommend aussie moist 3 min deep, giovanni conditioners and rusk smoother conditioner.

C)comb through top layer with a fine toothed comb. This gets the waves in sync.

D)apply a light glazing of grease for extra hold and shine. This also prevents the ashy look from leaving in conditioner.

E)use a scarf to help the hair set. I prefer a durag for this.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips ladies. I've tried on soaking wet hair with aloe vera gel, brushing with a denman and tying with a scarf, pantyhose, etc. I was only successful with a very small section.

@Napp...I'm am terrified to use a fine tooth comb. I used it when I first went natural and it ripped out a clump of my hair. Toss them all in the trash.

@luvsmuhgrass...I can even get mine to look like your siggy I would be thrilled if I could get that.

you can use a denman too. I just prefer a fine toothed comb because in feel like i have more control with it. i hold the comb at an angle and smooth the top layer. I dont get the same effect with a denman. My comb is the widest fine toothed comb i could find if that make sense. I did the same with my combs when i joined hair forums. Maybe somewhere along your journey you might feel comfortable enough to try them out again. :)

also you might find that lightly damp hair is easier to sync up than soaking wet hair. For me soaking wet plus gel equals crinkly uneven waves. Nothing wrong with that, its just not a look i prefer.

Boar bristle brush (wave brush) and a stronger gel. I've had good results with ecostyler (clear or green) and Fantasia IC with sparklytes. Start with wet hair, smooth on the gel (enough to get good hold), smooth with the boar hair brush, then make your puff/ponytail. If you need you can use more gel and rebrush with the boar bristle brush at this point. Tie your hair down with a scarf for 10-15 minutes and voila, waves for days

Here lately I've been using a combination of CFC Gold, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in, Wonder 8, and my Tangle Teezer.

I start out by detangling with my TT, then I rub some CFC Gold in first, then I go back through with the Cantu (for added moisture), and I seal with Wonder 8. I use my TT again to smooth out my hair and that's pretty much it.

Sometimes I'll add a little QP Elasta Mango Butter to my edges.:yep:

Oh and at night, I wear a moisture sealing, satin scarf. That's pretty much it.

@Napp...I never thought about trying in on damp hair. I always thought that it was better on soaking wet hair. Hmmmm....gotta try this and see if it works out better. Maybe I could try a WIDE fine tooth comb . It shouldn't be to damaging on already detangled hair.

@Foxglove...I am loving your waves! I have the green EcoStyler but I thought I read somewhere that boar bristle brushes are not good for hair (well brushes with bristles in general). I could be wrong. Does it do any damage to your hair or mainly just smoothing?

@Ms_Coco...I love the tangle teezer. Really leaves my hair tangle free. I've tried the cantu before but I have some more at home. I will revisit it and see if it works out better this time.

Thanks ladies. Your techniques sound promising.

Keep them coming!! I'm on a mission. Gotta get it down before spring time. :yep:

I think your hair is gorgeous anyway! If those tips don't help you, maybe your hair just doesn't do that like the pic of the young lady you posted. I can glop on loads of product and my hair won't look like that because ... it just doesn't.

Boar bristle brushes are the only kind it IS okay to use because they tend to be softer and yes, used for smoothing. But I think even these should only be used in moderation.
Good luck with your smooth waters!

@Your Cheeziness....That is what I'm thinking. My hair may not get it but I figure I would try somemore techniques before I completely give up.

@winnettag...thanks for the info about boar bristle brushes. I own one that I used when I was relaxed but haven't used it since the BC. I will try it but definitly use it in moderation. Trying to keep every strand on my head that I can.
