Sealing???

What does it mean when ppl say they "seal" their hair w/ something?? ... Thank you in advance.

Sealing basically locks the moisture into your hair...for example, after washing, you put on your leave-in conditioner, and then seal with oil.

Oils don't moisturize, but they can block in/out moisture. If you put on a moisturizer and then a thin coat of oil, the oil will ''seal'' that moisture in, so your hair stays moisturized longer.

I have always heard this. So even Coconut Oil doesn't mositurize?? I have been relying on Coconut oil and sweet almond oil to moisturize my hair.

Coconut oil is one of those special oils that actually can penetrate the hair shaft so ppl generally use it moreso for its shining quality for hair. I sometimes seal with it bc it's what I grab but it really doesn't lock in moisture as great as the heavier oils like castor for example. There is a thread on here somewhere about coconut oil.

Oh I hear you! I use coconut oil instead of lotion and I was trying to figure out how I won't look like went swimming in a bucket of fried chicken this summer.

Castor oil is one of those special ones too. It does have moisturizing properties.

Sometimes using it moderately is the key.

I've never used Mango butter, but I supposed you can seal with it...shea butter should be good for this as well.


Castor is great for sealing but I usually mix it with a lighter oil to make it less heavy.
There are alot of great oils out there to try, like jojoba, sweet almond, grapeseed, apricot, olive, the list goes on. I enjoyed experimenting to see which one worked best for my hair (jojoba and grapeseed!). HTH!

Coconut and jojoba are two oils whose molecules are small enough to penetrate the pores in the hair shaft. Even still, they don't moisturize. Oils are wonderful nourishment for your hair, but you shouldn't depend on them for moisture...

Yes, you can. Butters are a great alternative if your hair doesn't respond well to oil. My hair is the most moisturized when I seal with avocado butter.
