I grew up wearing them all the time, my hair was natural at the time and I knew nothing about hair care so I dont know what or if there was any protection for my hair. I kept my hair in a ponytail and them wrapped the ends of the scarf around the ponytail to form a bun, I do rememeber my edges were dry and shorter than the rest of my hair.
Do any of you ladies wear scarves as a protective hair tool? If so what type of material do you use and what progress have you seen from wearing them?

I sleep in a satin scarf and sometimes wear them around the house when I'm not going anywhere.

Sleeping in them saves my hair from breakage and since I have a bad habit of playing in my hair and tangling it, the scarves are good for protecting the hair from unnecessary manipulation. As far as edges are concerned, I don't really have any advice, as I've not run into that problem so far. I try to tie it so that the scarf is covering my edges as completely as possible and not putting any tension on them.

HTH!

When I wear scarves, I wear Saran Wrap or a baggy underneath so the material doesn't matter to me.

IMO this is the most protection I give my hair. Considering I don't use products (moisturizer or leave in) and havent used in for over a year, my hair is left vulnerable to the elements so when I do wrap my head, my hair enjoys protection it doesn't usually get.

I do this so sporadically for me to be able to share any visible effects from it, but logic tells me that my hair gets the best care when I keep it under a scarf/headwrap. I just make sure to the edge of the scarf is on my forehead...er FIVE head and not the hairline so it doesn't rub against it. If there's one thing a big head is useful for it's providing a platform for tying a scarf. :giggle:

You don't use any kind of moisturizer??!! Really? Do you do water spritzes? How often do you co-wash?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it just boggles my mind that you don't use moisturizers!!

Oh, and sorry OP! I promise I'm not trying to hijack the thread!!

When I work in a casual environment, scarves are all I wear. Especially since I only wear grey and jeans when I'm casual. When I need to be more professional I just pin my hair up.
I generally go to TJ Maxx or some place like that to get colorful silk scarves. Also if you go to a fabric store and get a yard of silk fabric, it can be cheaper.

I wear a satin scarf but mostly I wear a satin bonnet. I think a bonnet is easier on the hair line. I also have a satin pillow case. I get head aches when I tie my scarves too tight so I prefer the bonnets.

Why did your post make me burst out laughing? :lachen:

When I'm in braids or twists (been in braids since April 2009), yes, I do not use any leave-in products. I just shampoo/condition/ACV my hair twice a week and baggy nightly or if wearing a hat/scarf. One of my washes per week involves a DC. That's it. I don't really CW much when in braids. I might do it if I feel like it just once in a while, but usually I don't. When it twists, I do CW more often because I find twists easier to stretch and style when they are damp, and rather than just add water that will evaporate and leave them dry, I CW.

And this is why I might be stuck at my length for the next 20 years, unless I can commit to PS and sealing my ends. But I can't seem to find the drive to do it and love not having anything on my hair. I tried sealing wet hair with Castor oil last night so I could try out Curlformers again and the hair felt so gross. I couldn't wait to wash it off.

I would say scarves are a good protective styling tool. You can wear a satin scarf under the scarves if they are cotton. Also you can baggy. When I baggy I am paranoid about the crunching sound so I cover the baggy with a wave cap then put my scarf on.

i use a stay put satin bonnet. Ive tried using scarves but they always come off or give me a headache. my bonnet stays on all night and doesn't push my buttons.

Cuz you're silly! :lachen::lachen::lachen:

I guess now that I'm learning so much about my hair and how much it loves moisture, I just find it surprising that you don't use any moisturizer on your hair. Yet it always looks fantastic when you post pictures of it. Do you have a fotki account BTW? :eyebrows2

For me, scarves are very protective. I sleep wild as hell, and my head ends up everywhere by the time the night is through. Having the scarf on keeps my hair from getting messed up when I'm bunning overnight, and keeps it from rubbing all over my sheets. Sometimes, I just wear the plain scarf, and sometimes I baggy under the scarf. I definitely notice a difference in the health and smoothness of my ends when I don't wear a scarf at night for whatever reason. And since I've committed to wearing one every night, my hair has been retaining more and looking better.

I usually wear silk or satin (polyester), and I get them from the BSS.
They've never given me edge issues, but I have had issues with my nape because of them. I tie the knot in the back, and I have a itty bitty neck, so it always ends up at my nape. After a while, it started rubbing some nape out. :nono:

I do (but it's private) but every photo I've taken w/r/t hair has been to post on here, so it's not like you're missing anything.

When I joined LHCF, I tried the moisture moisture moisture route and hated it. My hair didn't seem to do any better either than it was doing with the no moisture regimen so I returned to the devil I know.

OP, i used to do the same day in, day out and my hair grew effortlessly to almost APL. I say 'effortlessly' because i wasn't aware of all these haircare practice 'rules'. My hair was my hair.
I just pulled my relaxed hair into a simply bun and wrapped just the bun in a satin scarf. Wasn't doing it for protection - just because i was lazy with everyday styling for school/college.

I sometimes do it now but of course i HAVE to add that bit of cling film (what we call saran wrap in the UK) under the scarf.

I like head wraps a lot. I always sleep in a silk scarf. In the winter I wear silk scarves underneath hats, etc. This is my first year making and wearing wigs but when the weather turns cold I'll prolly line them with silk gauze too. So yes, I'd say they're a very good protective styling option.

I liked the "but it's private" invisible words... clever :yep: What's w/r/t? I plead ignorance to that acronym.

I wear a silk or satin scarf usually over my shower cap at night but sometimes I just wear it on my hair at home and I don't have issues. I used to wear cotton scarves on my head all of the time. After I came here I realized that cotton scarves were a bad idea.

I sleep in a satin scarf and hair bonnet. The scarf is used to lay down my cornrows/braids and keep them neat, while the bonnet is there because the scarf will just slip off without it.

I love wearing headscarves too. I usually use them to stretch out an old style--twists, cornrows, or braids that are a little too frizzy/ratty-looking but I'm not willing to give up just yet.

Or sometimes instead of a WNG, I'll toss wet, oiled hair into a loose ponytail and then tie the scarf around. With some large hoop earrings its more than just an emergency style though--I get compliments on them all the time.

I wear a scarf almost all the time I'm in the house, and my hands still manage to find their way into my hair :look:

In 2000, I did a BC. I had an Angela Bassett moment and had my stylist cut off all my hair. That same year I discovered Wanakee (now www.hairoil.com). I began using her system & her methods. 90% of the time my hair was under a 100% silk scarf. I washed/DCed/rollerset it once a week & then I would wrap it & go under the silk scarf.

I would put a little Constant Care for ends (from the Wanakee line) on my ends as I took the rollers down, then apply the hair oil to seal. (Of course I didn't know anything about sealing back then.) I would wrap my hair & it would stay under a silk scarf all week. I only took my hair down daily to place a little bit of oil on it & it was right back under a scarf.

I did this consistently & went from a fade to BSL/MBL hair in 2 years.

Even though I don't use this system anymore, I still place my hair under a 100% silk scarf nightly. If my scarf is dirty & I use my so-called satin bonnet I can tell a difference in my hair the next day.
