I've never heard of it. But I think it may either irritate the scalp, strip it of natural oils, or damage the new growth, I'd be scared to give it a try, what are the supposed benefits anyway?
I wondered about this too because Revlon has a shampoo that exfoliates the scalp. I thought that maybe it was help with hair growth by getting rid of the dead skin. Hmmmm, that's a good question.
I can understand massaging the scalp to increase circulation, but I guess I don't understand exfoliation...
Usually the kind of 'recipe' you'll see is one that will say something like "add tablespoon sea salt (or brown sugar, or cornmeal, or anything rough/grainy) to your shampoo/conditioner, and rub into the scalp".
Wouldn't a good brushing do the trick? Also, I don't know how you could actually get to the scalp without damaging roots of the hair doing this..
Think about it this way... you exfoliate your face, but your eyebrows and those little hairs all over aren't damaged by the process. Exfoliation should only dislodge dead skin. It shouldn't damage your hair follicles.
I use a sugar scrub once a month just to loosen dead skin on my scalp. My natural oils have yet to be stripped.
Those little shampoo brushes scratch my scalp too much and the plastic doesn't really penetrate too well through the density of my hair. I use a hand massager daily, but that doesn't clear away anything; it just stimulates increased circulation.
