Has anyone here retained hair length by doing rollersets? I have been doing the bun method but would like to alternate every week with the bun method one week and rollersetting the next week.
I've retained length doing rollersets, but the problem is I do them on a stretch. I get tired, and then I don't do them for a while, so I'm not exactly sure how much I retain though, but you should ask Hiza, because she rollersets quite a bit.
Pooh,
I think any style that requires little manipulation can help retain length. For example, I found a thread from this time last year where they wre doing a braid out challenge. Since braid outs require no heat, and little manipulation they are semiprotective as long as u concentrate on moisture at all times.
I think rollersets can be used the same way, but I think bantu knot setting can come out looking like a roller set without all the combing that rollersets require. I think I comb out more hair when I wrap or rollerset bc I have to use a skinnier comb to get it smooth.
Ive been washing 2X a week and doing braidouts or bantu sets, while focusing on moisture(2X or more a day!) and my hair seems to be thanking me. I already told u I have a big head so the bun isnt very becoming on me...I think I look just plain ROUGH when I wear one. Maybe it will grow on me if I invest in some cute hair accessories and earrings, etc.
You know how a lot of ppl put vaseline on their ends and then bun? Well at night Ive been plaiting my hair up(like the color purple...lol) and putting a little vaseline on the ends to hold them and it seems to be working like a charm, my hair and ends feel very soft and moisturized and I think if u can keep your hair in that state the length will be retained.
Yes, to add..Rollersets can help retain length..all of the women who patronize the Dominican salon in my town have long flowing and very very healthy looking hair. I have been going there for 3 years now and the patrons hair have never looked healthier and the length on some of the black womens hair that frequent that salon is amazing. Rollersets is an excellent way to retain hair length. Shampoo/conditioning products play an integral role as well.
I find that when I rollerset consistently, I also retain length. But the bun and rollerset method don't have to be mutually exclusive. You could do them both! When I rollerset consistently for a stretch, I rollerset, wrap, and put my hair right back in a bun. Some people may think that's a lot of work to do to just bun your hair after, but I think the hair needs the extra care and protection anyway. That way the hair gets the care it needs to retain length, and the bun protects the ends of the hair so that the length you gain adds to your length, and doesn't become a casualty of your next trim.

I am new to the boards and was wondering what exactly is the bun method?

The bun method is simply keeping your hair in a bun everyday or the majority of the week. It protects the ends of your hair and helps u avoid manipulating your hair.
I'm trying the rollerset and bun method myself with going to dominican salons every two weeks. The first week I wear the blowout and the second week I do a bun. We'll see how much length I retain.

I was thinkin' about doin' that!

This is what I did during the bun challenge. I'd rollerset (didn't know how to wrap though) and then I'd make my bun. A little more time consuming but my hair thrived and my bun looked great.
