resistance to perm now

i know this moght sound dumb but can your hair build up a resistance to a certain perm brand? i've used Optimum Care Anti-Breakage Regular Relaxer about 4 times. the first two times, i loved it but the next one seemed not to do anything. i thought i mixed it wrong or had a bad batch or something so i did a correction about a month and a half later, which only slightly loosened the curl of my ng, creating "waves" of ng. so i guess im kinda texlaxed...so is this typical?

Don't know if your hair actually can become resistant to a certain relaxer brand, but I always felt like mine did which is why I switched brands a lot over the years.

I never had that problem with "salon brands" like Mizani or Phyto, only BSS perms which leads me to think that it may be the quality of the product/ sitting on the shelf too long, etc...

I have one patch in the back of my head at the nape area that is resistant to relaxer...as a matter fact, it broke off to about 1 inch and will not grow anymore...NOT sure what happened????

Definitely! This is normal. Your hair becomes use to anything you constantly use on it. It just stops working well. You have to find another relaxer and use that for awhile, then go back to your original relaxer.

I've been doing relaxers for over 25 years and I've seen it happen to me and others countless times. It also happens with skincare. Facial moisturizers stops working and you have to temporarily use something else, but you can go back to it and it will work fine again. It's normal that our skin and hair gets use to things. How many times have we heard somebody say "I use to love that conditioner"? It stopped working. That's why we stop loving it, it doesn't work well anymore. If we give it time, it'll start working again.

Are you serious??????? I NEVER knew this! Maybe this is my problem.

I'm kind of in doubt about this, because your new growth has never been relaxed with the product so how could it become used to the product?

I think maybe you got an old batch or maybe you've been using a new product on your hair that protects your hair (against the relaxer) more than you realize. Also, it could be a supplement that you are taking if any. A supplement changes the quality and composition of the hair and maybe your hair resists the relaxer because of that.

Yes.

She would relax way too often because of her hair 'reverting'. On top of that her hair was dry & brittle. When I was lurking (non paying) I searched google and found this thread. My mom takes synthroid (sp?) and I told her about why this was happening..she is natural now.

I relax my hair, it seems straight but always reverts. I am gonna go read that thread ASAP.

It happened with my hair and Hawaiian Silky's regular relaxer. I like Supergirl's theory.
