Relaxing with fingers

Yes I too, get that slippery feeling but once I wash my hands it goes away. It hasn't had any negative impact on my nails either. I have tried the skin tight gloves but it's still not the same because you can't "feel" the hair.

I wash my hands with the neutralizing shampoo afterwards and have not had any problems

This is what I did. I tried the gloves but I couldn't work with them and I had to hurry so I took them off.

Next time I self-relax, I will use my fingers. (I tried the applicator brush the last time.)

The first and only time I relaxed myself, I immediately found the gloves cumbersome, so I took them off. No issue here...

I did it with a no-lye relaxer and afterward, my hands were really rough, dry and peeling slightly. It took days before the skin recovered. No burns though.

When I permed my hair a few days ago, I was getting fed up with the gloves that felt 2 times to big and plus the fact that I couldnt tell if I was really getting the new growth, so i threw off the gloves and used my fingers. They didnt burn or anything. I just made sure I rinsed right after but i was able to see what I was doing. Has anyone done this and gotten burned badly? Am I doing something I shouldnt be doing?

I wouldn't recommend relaxing or processing hair without gloves.:nono:

About 13 years ago I did relax my hair without gloves and all my fingernails nearly dropped off, literally.:cry2: Prior to that, I always had very hard fingernails. They were yellow for months and very soft.
Never again.:ohwell:

Ever since then I have always invested in a box of latex gloves so I never run out.

ETA: The gloves that come in those box kits are a total joke.

I do the same thing. Nothing has ever happened to me. Your fine.

I don't use glove either, My nails don't like it much, they turn yellow too.
I try to keep a dry towel to wipe my hands off on every few minutes while relaxing.

I don't think you have to worry about it absorbing into the bloodstream. Not everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream. They would not be able to market it if it did. Think about lotions, perfumes, soaps, dish detergent etc, etc. There are things that stay on the skin much longer than relaxer that don't do that kind of harm.

Softresses

I never use gloves either. When I try to use them the perm be all over my neck and ears, my shirt and sometimes the floor lol. Because the gloves be to big and the start slipping of my hands and then when I try to pull them up I end up ripping a hole in them.

Your nails pay the price they become really soft, yellow and brake off.
I know because i have ALWAYS relax my hair with my fingers.

interesting. i used gloves only 2-3 times when i relaxed. i could never understand how self-relaxers could wear gloves and get the back of the hair straight. My nails didnt turn yellow or get soft. I stopped relaxing a year ago and my nails haven't gotten harder or clearer. I guess it just depends on the person.

same here. I relax with my fingers and my nails never get soft or turn yellow. I don't leave it on my hands too long, though. I wipe them off with a towel periodically during the process.

The relaxer used could play a part as well.

Sad to say...I do relax with my fingers...I can't use those darn gloves on my hair or anyone else for that matter...and my nails do get soft and turn yellow...but only temporary...they don't stay yellow and they become solid hard when they dry:)

I just did this and will continue to relax this way. I could feel where I missed, what needed smoothing etc without having to have eyes in the back of my head! It was great!

Think it's rough on your nails though, drying but I will find a way to work arond that.

i stopped using gloves years ago. when i was going to a stylist, she never used gloves.

the only time i use gloves is if i have a cut or bruise on my hands.

Same here. I used a lye relaxer though (revlon).
