I'm planning on getting highlights on Wednesday. I currently dye my hair with a semi-permanent black rinse, but I want to add a bit more dimension to my hair. I'm thinking some chestnut brown or something along those lines. What do I need to do to prepare my hair before going in? Protein? Moisture? Any advice would be great.

How about both? Using both a protein and a moisturizing conditioner helped me so much! I would use a protein conditioner (not a hard protein) like Motions CPR followed by a moisturizing conditioner. I would also lighten up on the heat. I avoid heat like the plague! LOL!

I just put a rinse in my hair to get it back one color. While I loved the highlights, no matter what I did, it still made my hair break off. Now my hair is pitch black and I love it. My advice is to make sure your hair is strong and in tip-top shape to begin with because the chemicals used to lighten your hair, on top of a relaxer, can really spell trouble if you don't watch out. Good luck, and make sure you post your results.

uhhhh...your hair is gorgeous!

I had golden brown highlights and they broke my hair off something rancid! Because my natural hair is so dark, she bleached them highlights in (I know this was pre-lhcf). I wound up cutting all of my hair off and starting all over.

You hair Mai Tai is something fierce! Ooooh Weee! What's your reggie? What color highlights did you have?

Thanks for all the responses ladies, I'm starting to get worried now though and may just cancel the appointment. I have spent the better part of a year getting my hair to a healthy state and don't want to do anything to jeopardize it. But I'm just kind of bored of the monotone color!

Cosigning this.. took my lovely locks from past APL to shoulder length (breakage) in a matter of months!

I am still new to this regimen thing. I usually was my hair weekly with Nexxus Therappe, and condition with Nexxus Humectress, towel dry, apply Nexxus Heat Protect, Mizani Foam wrap foam, blow dry, then flat iron with my CHI and apply Biosilk Silk therapy.

Since lurking on this forum, I have added Aphogee 2 minute Recon. ORS Replinishing Conditioner, and I also purchased a bonnet dryer for my DC's. QP Mango Butter, and Jojoba oil to seal.

I have decided through numerous tries, that highlights may not be for me. My natural hair color is really really reeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy dark so my stylist has to use harsh chemicals to lighten my hair. On top of my relaxer, this can equal disaster, and usually does.
