How do you do it without burning yourself? I am terrified of doing it to myself, well the back and middle where I can't see. How do you see to make sure you are not hitting your scalp. I am about 7 weeks post and I have a function to go to. I would really prefer to not go the dominican salon.

Hmmm... I have never had that problem. I just do it by feel and it just works. :look: Have you thought of blowdrying the roots to maybe get them straighter? Then you wouldn't have to get so close if you're that worried about it. Good luck!

I've tried but it never straightens and i think the flat iron gives it more of a sheen.

I section my hair with clips and then come through the section that I want to straighten. I take that section and lift it from my scalp as I pass the flat iron through it and you wont touch your scalp unless you're intentionally clamping it there. Instant burn means it may be too hot.

My scalp has only been burned when it was straightened with a hot comb. Maybe you could flat iron your hair in sections using a thin comb to protect your scalp. For each section, put your comb in your hair so that it is flesh against your scalp, then put the flat iron on the other side of the comb and begin straightening your hair. I guess that would be the reverse follow-the-comb method. Or maybe that is the follow the comb method...I can't remember.

that is a good idea. i don't know why i didn't think of this. i do this to my cousin when flat ironing her hair.

How would the hot plates of the flat iron even touch your scalp? The plastic edge around the flat iron seems like it would prohibit your scalp from being burned. I've never been burned by a flat iron- now a hot comb...ouch!

Im relaxed and flatiron my roots after rollersetting. I use a one inch flat iron and divide into sections using clamps too. But the trick is to make really small sections of hair that are going to be flatironed. This is what I do and it really does the trick.

This is pretty much what I do after my rollersets when I have a lot of new growth. Haven't had any issues with burning my scalp. I have a Chi ceramic iron (not sure if that makes a difference).
