I've heard some people say that they put vaseline on their scalp, but that just prevents the scalp from burning. To prevent overprocessing you are supposed to keep track of how long the creme is on your head from start to finish and be sure to use a neutralizer.
I have done my own touch-ups a few times, but when my hair was really long (about 30 inches) it was really tough.
I go home to NYC for my touch ups and just do my own roller sets. Be careful, once the hair is damaged there is nothing you can do to reverse the effect, but to trim slowly or out right cut it off.
Some relaxer kits come with protective creams, but you can also use conditioner. I like Lekair cholesterol because it's so heavy. I just slather it on all of the previously relaxed hair. Waiting 12 weeks also helps because then I can really tell the line of demarcation between my newgrowth and previously relaxed hair.
