How do you ladies refresh your hair when its straightened? I just washed my hair Sunday straightened it Monday night and here it is Wednesday morning and my hair stinks :( I tried rubbing some mint extract in my palm and taking it through my scalp and hair but now it just smells like stank mint. Can anybody help? And forgive me if this was previously discussed I'm on My phone and cant do a search.

im sorry but :lol::lol::lol:

have you tried hair perfumes? aquolina makes a good one. or perhaps try using a dry shampoo?

LOL Girl, you just might be PMSing because I know when I'm PMSing everything smells stronger than normal because your senses are heightened where I can smell MY hair, the person's hair walking by me and the girl's hair over THERE. LOL

But that's a hard one if you say you tried the mint extract and the smells are just mixing. Do you have a favorite leave-in with a nice scent. I like HE LTR which smells like raspberries and I would put that in my hair after it was flat-ironed to give it a nice scent sometimes... just a little though.

HTH!!

I don't know if this helps but might be something to try next time. I find my hair doesn't smell when straightened and I wear straight hair for a week at most--which is the longest I've gone w/o washing my hair since 2001. I think the reason for this is I do not use any products in my hair. I simply make sure I get all my moisture during my pre-press wash and conditioning. There after I only use heat protectants. My scalp stays bare...and I don't baggy during this time but just use satin/silk scarves either on my head or wrap my pillow with them.

Another thing I want to mention is when I used heat protectant in 2009--that was my first time ever--there was no hint of that very familiar smell that seems to accompany heat-straightened hair. Not a whiff whatsoever! If you read my posts on that flatiron experience, I raved most about this because even when my hair got wet, there wasn't that smell either...but only the smell of shampoo and conditioner.

So I think the smell you are talking about comes from burned protein in hair--which can be avoided if you coat your hair well with a good heat protectant (That doesn't mean be heavy handed but be meticulous in your coverage)--and from applying different products to your hair which add their own weird smell to the mix...not to mention sebum and sweat.

As someone else shared, I would recommend the waterless shampoo, but next time I say avoid grease and oils. Keep things simple. westNDNbeauty's press regimen I think keeps things simple so might work for you.

I would air it out either finger combing in front of a fan or with a blowdryer on cool. What is causing the smell? I had to air out my hair when I'd go out with friends that smoke. Worked well.

I think you should just wash it. Nothing can get rid of the smell. It's kind of like spraying perfume on a t-shirt you sweated in.

Rei ahhhh, my quote. lol

:lachen: how horrible for you guys to laugh at me and my stank hair. But thanks ladies ill look into your suggestions.
Nonie you always have the most informative help!!

FTR the smell is not bad it just small like dirty hair. And I would wash again but I just put that heat in my hair and would rather not do it again so soon.

Is the smell originating from your hair or from your scalp? If it's your scalp then witch hazel applied with a cotton swab works well for me. If it's your hair then there is little you can do save washing it. Leave ins and products just seem to add another of scent to the funk for me. That's why i don't put anything on heat straightened hair save heat protectant. Extra products + Heat = Funk (at least for me) and I haven't found a thing that masks the smell well enough for me to be able to tolerate it.

:lachen:@ how it went from stink to stank. I had this when I was relaxed and when I first straightened my hair when natural. I believe my problem was what Nonie said, products and no heat protectant. Before I learned the proper technique I used lots of products and no heat protectant. Now, I follow westNDNbeauty technique and use a really good moisturizing DC before and only a small but sufficient amount of heat protectant and it works I wear it for a week and no STANK smell like before.

A stank mint?

bahahahahahahaha....

I'm sorry I have no suggestions..that just tickled me on the inside part.

Woo...minty stank.. haha

Oh..I have heard they have hair perfume though. But that just might mix with the minty stank and create a whole new stank of epic proportions..so nvm.. I guess.

I'm gonna go ..now

Hello. If your hair smells not because it or your scalp is dirty, then i recommend http://www.saveonscents.com/. They have phenomenally scented fragrance oils. I use moonlight path ( a scent by bath and body) to cut the nutty scent of my shea butter. A sample is around 3 dollars. That and as someone mentioned - airing it out. i.e leave your car windows down a bit when you dry and let the wind whip through a bit. Heavy preparation next time ( DC/ protein treat?light heat protectant etc) will decrease the amount of moisturizers and products you must place in your hair. HTH

If I want to refresh my hair I use a dry shampoo (Ojon) or a bit of soft hold hair aerosol hair spray (Garnier Fructis - smells nice without that alcohol "hair spray" smell)

lustrous, thank you for this link. I love finding new places to purchase fragrance oils!

I think i know what smell you're talking about (i've experienced this before), and I think Nonie is right; it probably has something to do with heat + too much product. I usually air dry my hair after washing, and I try to be veryyy light if i decide to put in a leave-in before flat ironing (i'd avoid using oils just yet). i put in some heat protectant and then after i finish flat ironing i'll moisturize and seal if i feel it's needed. Now that I think about it I haven't noticed that smell in a while. I don't know how to get rid of it once it's trapped in your hair, but this may be something to think about for the next time you flat iron.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I used a homemade dry shampoo and it worked great! My hair smells like my conditioner again! :yep: thanks, again!
