The statement Heat = Damage is a no brainer for most LHCFers, but the reality of this is hitting home for me as I am searching through my hair for split ends today.

I am seeing sooo many splits and thin ends I am having to let go of due to last year's pressing and curling after I came out of my braids.

In some places I'm losing less than a quarter of an inch of hair, in others, the strand split way up high - about 1" - 1.5" away from the end of the hair.

Now I truely understand why I was never seeing growth before. When a you clip your ends, but then curl them under immediately with a hot appliance, you're not doing yourself any favors. When you add the fact that your hair may already be damaged, it's a recipe for negative growth.

Gold N' Hot electric straightning comb = evil
Marcell irons = evil
Poor blow dryers = evil
Me Applying heat to my own hair = evil
No heat protectant = evil
Petroleum Products = evil

Never again, will I treat my hair so badly.

I look forward to seeing my ends in the next 6 months, and seeing how they will have improved. This is not something that I can even photograph as far as progress, I just have to write about it, so I can remember when I look at this forum in Jan '07 and see how far I've come.

It's exciting to think that the "new generation" of hair on my head will be heat virgin strands! I know that I will see a real difference.

I agree.

I use heat w/o a problem, but I started using a comb attachment on my blowdryer and everything went down after that.

I had never used a comb attachment before so i did not know what it could do.

It was chewing off my hair!

I stopped using it a few weeks ago and I can already tell a big difference in my hair.

pyxis777, thank you for this post. I have recently been toying with the idea of getting my hair pressed every 2 weeks, and whether or not I should do it myself. I love my natural hair but I'm dying to try something new. My friends think I only want to change my hair because I'm going through a lot of other changes in my life, I guess that's true. I definitely don't want to do anything at the cost of my hair's health though. I think I'll stick to getting it pressed for special occasions this summer, and maybe try to wear braidouts and twistouts on the days I feel like wearing my hair "out" (I'm trying to wear my hair twisted for most of the summer, I doubt I'll stick to it but I'm going to try...).
