Ugh, I was running an errand and saw a beauty shop in Center city ( I live in Center City philadelphia) which looked like a piece of crap but I went in anyways and asked if they rollerset hair. I wanted to give myself a break and have a free day just for me. It looked like a DOminician shop....there were DOminicans there......and yet they have the nerve to say 45 dollars for a wet set. Now I have already paid 45 dollars for a wet set at other salons and they F'd it up. I mean, COMEON! I love philly and all but seriously these are New York prices and I no longer make a NEW YORK SALARY. How dare they come out their face with 45 to do my hair. I use to pay 25 dollars a week, if that. And to have the nerve to charge me that much when the salon looks like SH*T and the stylist didnt even have teeth! I should at least get 10 dollars off for hygiene. WTF!?!??!

*LMAO* @ Macherie!!!! That's too funny. There should be a discount for being subjected to squalor during your hair appointment. BTW, your hair in your siggy pic is so pretty. You are one of my hair inspirations. Makes me want to hang in there!***cheering myself on by viewing Macherie's Fotki***:weird:

that is high for a rollerset...in Miami..most places ask about 20.00 to 25.00 ...thats from the last time i went to the hair salon...and the lady washed, did a treatment, then rollerset, and wrapped...and i believe i paid 25.00....

Hi Macherieamour,

You are probably better off LEAVING that shop rather than letting them do your hair at any price!

The stylist may have jacked up your beautiful hair just out of jealousy.

Good luck finding a better salon! :D

Was this quoted prices or did they take one look at that gorgeous head of yours and price it that way?

Giiiirrrllll! When you said Center City(went to school in Philly) I thought of this salon my husband had been crusin' by in Atlanta on Stewart Ave. He saw that they did Wash 'n Sets for about $12. He kept buggin' me and buggin' me about this place, I kept putting him off and puttin' him off. This was after I had my baby almost 3 years ago. My hair was shedding so bad and I was just sooooo hair depressed.

Anyway, we just happen to be passing by so I let him talk me into checkin' the place out. Chile, I walked up in there and the main stylist had one of the most horrible breakouts on her face. The bumps were black and big. When she opened her mouth I saw nothing but tonsils. No teeth in her head what so ever. It smelled like somebody had been smoking SOMETHING in the back. I just stopped at the door. I surveyed the rest of the salon. There was girls getting some Ampro gel, weaved styles, bright orange. platinum and yellow dye jobs. I just threw out some questions about relaxing and whatnot and jetted. When I got to the car, I said, "Negro, dem ladies look crack heads. No sir, I'm sorry, they ain't TOUCHING my head." I hated to be like that, but look here, 12 bucks, you get what you pay for!

yeah she looked at my head and priced it like that  She was like, mami for your hair.....45. Soooo sketchy! There wasnt even a price chart! And when i asked for a card, they gave me SOMEONE ELSE's card and just scratched out the old info. Jesus!

Oh! I think someone was getting a tatoo in the back too. I heard that oh so familiar buzzing sound.....

Arg! Philly why have you forsaken me ***fist in the air***

Damn girl, sorry to hear that but if that pic in your signiture is the job they did, then job well done...that price is too expensive...NY prices for a wash and set are no more then 20.00.

If you're going to pay those kinds of prices at least go to a nice salon. Try Kysha at Paradise Island Hair Studio and Spa on Vine Street 215-569-9644. You'll pay the same prices, but you won't be disappointed. She's big into hair health, natural hair and stretching relaxers. She uses great products like Phyto and Alterna.

oh girl..ive lived in philly for 2 years now..i used to live in ny and nj..girllll no offense to philly people but the attitudes there are no joke. My guess? they probably just jealous and tryin to mess with you cos obviously they look like they got messed with..lol

honestly, be careful who you let touch your hair in philly tho..cos i know there a lot of hatin ass girls there and they will do all they can to make sure that you come up out the shop looking f-ed up..

if they arent reputable looking, imagine what they'll do to your hair..
*shudders* just be careful.. cos you might roll up out there with your hair all fried and mysteriously cut etc., etc., be careful....please. a good head of hair is horrible thing to waste. lol

Quoted for emphasis :lachen:

tewnydollas'!!!!!? Shoot!! In L.A. that BARELY gets you a press and curl. Forget someone spending some time to actually roll you up!! Your talking at LEAST $60. I'm definietly going to make sure I get my hair done the next time i'm in Philly or New York.

LOL, :lachen:   :lachen: , now that was too funny, but the price is high for a roller set it normally cost about $23 including a DC, I think the area Center City and maybe the length contributed to the price, but if the place was crappy looking then the location, Center City, played the bigger role in the cost.

Nope! I one-two-stepped my behind right out the door. I can do my hair for free! Funny, I actually had a dream last night that I opened my own Dominican salon, lol.

....THAT DREAM IS ABOUT TO BECOME A REALITY

Damn I'm loving NY right now I look at them crazy when they say more than $20. But certain salons do that they look at the length and charge you a price. Sister's in Harlem do that and they charge extra for your hair to be blown out after the roller set and extra for conditioner. I'm still stuck on my around the way hide out they have not hit it to mainstream yet so they don't charge extra for everything

With hair like yours I will be flying to Philly every week if / when you open your own salon

That's what I'm sayin! I don't even step into a salon without $65 in my wallet. I would rather pay more for good service and leave with my hair still on my head.

Welcome to Philly!! Lucky you didn't get dirty towels in your face! I have been living in Philly for 8 years and have gone to salons very infrequently because of the frustration. If you want an average looking salon, the service is way too expensive; if you want a not so average salon, it is still pricey and you end up being miserable because you meet rude and not so hygienic people (dirty towels and all). Most of them do not give a **** about your hair!! You have to get referral to a salon or you might hit the lottery and find a good one. Alot of Philadelphian travel to NY for hair care. Sorry you experienced what you did - it is a journey and a job in itself to find a good hair salon in Philly. I am still looking.......

Supastar; I called the number you mentioned to find out the cost to do a Phyto relaxer. She told me she does not do relaxer on clients that visit for the first time because she needs to do a series of deep conditioning first. I asked her how long is this series and what is the price range. She said she doesn't know what the cost will be because she has to evaluate my hair but but the minimum is $50 to wash and DC and it could be more, depending..... she still will not provide the range for a Phyto relaxer. Now, can you imagine the cost it will be for the series plus the relaxer????????????? it is SO frustrating!!! That is why I have resorted to keep my sanity and do my hair myself!
